Simple Past The simple past (Imperfekt) is sometimes referred to as the narrative past. Is used mainly in written German to narrate a series of past events. It is often found in: literature / reports / news etc. Like the perfect tense, the simple past tense includes: regular / irregular / mixed verbs. Let’s have a look at the simple past form for regular verbs

Simple Past – regular verbs You’ve already been introduced to regular verbs from the perfect tense. The simple past of regular verbs: Uses the verb root + -t(personal ending) kochen – to cook kochte (ich kochte) Notice the regular pattern: (German) kochen / kochte (English) cook / cooked Verb stems ending in –d / -t add a connecting e before the –t(personal ending) arbeiten / arbeitete work / worked

Simple Past – regular verbs Singular Plural ich kochte wir kochten du kochtest ihr kochtet Sie kochten sie kochten er kochte sie kochte es kochte Singular Plural ich arbeitete wir arbeiteten du arbeitetest ihr arbeitetet Sie arbeiteten sie arbeiteten er arbeitete sie arbeitete es arbeitete NOTE: the 1st and 3rd person pronouns use the same conjugation

Simple Past – irregular verbs You’ve already been introduced to irregular verbs from the perfect tense. The simple past of irregular verbs: Is signaled by a stem change gehen – to go (Present tense) Ich gehe nach Hause. (Simple past) Ich ging nach Hause. Er ging nach Hause. 1st & 3rd person pronouns have no personal endings

Simple Past – irregular verbs To see some similarities with English & German (English) swim / swam / (have) swum (German) schwimmen / schwamm / ist geschwommen (English) give / gave / (have) given (German) geben / gab / hat gegeben Notice now the difference between regular/irregular (Regular) – machen / machte / hat gemacht Similar or regular pattern (Irregular) – sprechen / sprach / hat gesprochen Different or irregular pattern

Simple Past – mixed verbs If you recall from learning the perfect tense, there is a small group of verbs that have both regular and irregular properties. Simple past of mixed verbs: Have stem change of irregular verbs & also –t(e) ending of regular verbs For example: denken / kennen / nennen / rennen / wissen dachte / kannte / nannte / rannte / wusste

wann / als / wenn Wann – question word used to ask direct/indirect questions Wann kommst du nach Hause? Wann gehen wir skifahren? Wissen Sie, wann das Spiel beginnt? Als – refers to something (single event) / (block of time) in the past Als ich nach Hause kam, gab es eine Party. Als ich in Wien war, lernte ich deine Mutter kennen. Wenn – refers to something in the present / future / repeated events (any time) Wenn ich Geburtstag habe, lade ich viele Freunde ein. Wenn wir jede Woche Stammtisch hatten, war es immer gemütlich.
