A separable verb is a doing word that splits into two parts when used in the Present Tense An example of a separable verb is ‘aufräumen’ – to tidy up

Look what happens to the ‘prefix’ (the first part of the separable verb) when the verb is used in a sentence

Ichräumemein Zimmerauf räumenauf INFINITIVE

aufräumen ich du Sie er/sie/es wir ihr sie räum …auf räum …auf räum …auf räum …auf räum …auf räum …auf räum …auf e st en t t (to tidy up)

abwaschen ich du Sie er/sie/es wir ihr sie wasch …ab w ä sch …ab wasch …ab w ä sch …ab wasch …ab wasch …ab wasch …ab e st en t t (to wash up)

Have you noticed….? The verb ‘abwaschen’ is not only separable but also irregular! (only with ‘du’ and ‘er/sie/es’) du w ä schst ab er/sie/es w ä scht ab
