How do YOU eat an Oreo? 1. Bite by bite 2. Eat it whole. 3. Twist 4. Dunk

Well, there is only ONE way to properly eat an Oreo. The “German” way The only way to eat an Oreo is the way Frau Shultz taught you to do it.

Separable prefix verbs a.k.a. OREO verbs

What is a prefix? A letter or group of letters attached to the beginning of a word that partly indicates its meaning. Common prefixes include anti- (against), co- (with), mis- (wrong, bad), and trans- (across).

What is a root or stem of a word? A word or word element from which other words grow, usually through the addition of prefixes and suffixes.

aussehen What is the prefix? Aus What is the root word? sehen

More about “aussehen” It is a separable prefix verb Also known as an “oreo verb” It means “to look” (as in appearance) The prefix is aus You must separate“aus” from the root word “sehen” “aus” goes to the end of the sentence or question When you conjugate “sehen” you need to change the stem of du, er/sie to “ie” Example: Er sieht attraktiv aus.

What words, in German, can describe the looks of something or someone? attraktiv, schön, hässlich, hübsch alt, jung gut, schlecht gesund, krank gross, klein, lang, kurz dick, vollschlank, schlank hell, dunkel blond, brünett, rotharrig hat eine/keine Brille blaue Augen lockige/glatte Haare

What words, in German, can describe a person’s character or personality? Arrogant Attraktiv Freundlich, unfreundlich Lustig, ernst Interessant, langweilig Nett, sympathisch Nicht nett, unsympathisch Ruhig, laut Scheu, unbefangen Ordentlich, schlampig Traurig, froh Böse, brav

What words in German can be used to describe looks and/or personality? Schlampig, ordentlich Nett, nicht nett Müde, faul Traurig, froh Freundlich, unfreundlich Böse, brav

Why do they call it an “oreo” verb?

"One of the most important decisions you must make is how to eat your Oreo cookies. Some people, especially those who are conservative and traditional, just bite into the Oreo without separating the chocolate wafer from the icing. Others, especially the chocolate lovers, twist the cookie apart and eat the filling first before they savor the chocolate wafer. Still others, the real risk takers, eat the wafer off of the carefully balancing the white fluff between their fingers until the wafer is gone and the filling is a light airy dessert."

Well….natürlich….the only right way is the “aussehen” way.

Let me explain….. First, You separate the top from the cream and bottom wafer. Twist, if needed. Be careful…. sometimes you have to add a little twist to get it right and not ruin the middle. Save the piece you pull off for last.

With aussehen….FIRST You separate the prefix from the rest of the verb aus + sehen. Be careful….sometimes you have to add a little twist to get it right and not ruin the middle. The twist in German? Sometimes when you conjugate it, you have to change “e” to “ie” in the verb “sehen. ” Du, er/sie ….make ie Ich sehe du sIEhst er and sie sIEht wir sehen ihr seht sie and Sie sehen Save the “aus” for last.

GO AHEAD Separate your cookie! Now, show your partner, which part of your oreo represents aus, and which part represents sehen and the rest of your sentence or question. Sehen + rest of sentence or question aus

Then Write your sentence or question. Don’t forget….the “good stuff” is in the middle…..the main sentence or question and details. Double check that the middle part looks good BUT……WAIT!!!!!

Don’t forget….. Fix the middle of your cookie, now that the parts are separated, make sure the cream ….the good stuff….is all in order and looks nice….double check for no flaws

GO AHEAD Fix the middle of your cookie, now that the parts are separated, make sure the cream ….the good stuff….is all in order and looks nice….double check for no flaws After you are sure the middle section looks good….yes…you may eat it….just the crème and wafer piece…the “meat” of your sentence or question

VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER!!! You still have the top wafer from the beginning of all this, which you broke apart. Save the top wafer for last. Don’t forget to write the “aus” last…..at the end of your sentence or question.

GO AHEAD Eat the last part of your oreo….the top wafer that you took off at the very beginning but SAVED FOR LAST. …eat the “aus.”

And that’s the proper way to eat an oreo Separate, twist if needed Keep all the good stuff in the middle Save the separated part for last

Üben wir….. Aus – “out” Mit – “with” Aussehen – to look (“out”)….outwardly appearance Ausrechnen – to calculate (out) Ausgeben – to give out Mit – “with” Mitkommen – to come with Mitbringen – to bring with Mitgehen – to go with

Let’s do it! I’m bringing the book (with me). Ich/mitbringen/das Buch Ich bringe das buch mit. Are you coming (with us)? Du/mitkommen Kommst du mit? Why are we standing up? Warum/wir/aufstehen Warum stehen wir auf?
