When do you use Personal Pronouns? Personal pronouns are used to replace any noun in a sentence. The Summer is Hot. It is hot. Der Sommer is heiß. Er ist Heiß. Just like in the English language, nouns can be replaced with a personal pronoun. In German, personal pronouns are based on gender, being plural or singular, and where it is in the sentence.
