A prominent identifying feature of a landscape. A building or site with historical significance, especially one marked for preservation by a municipal or national government.

MT VESUBIUS: It is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples. Mount Vesubius is best known for its eruption in AD79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. An estimated 16,000 people died. Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years.

MACHU PICCHU Machu Picchu is a pre- Columbian15th- century Inca site in Peru in South America. When the Spanish invaded Peru, the Incas left Machu Picchu unfinished. Some think it was because they were scared of the Spanish. Today, Machu Picchu is very difficult to get to because it is so high in the mountains.The world at large did not know it was there until it was rediscovered by a Yale graduate in 1911.

ULURU - ALSO KNOWN AS A YERS R OCK Uluru, is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory, central Australia. Uluru is sacred to the Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. Uluru is notable for appearing to change colour at different times of the day and year, most notably glowing red at dawn and sunset.

STONEHENGE Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire. Archaeologists believe the stone monument was constructed anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. Archaeological evidence found indicates that Stonehenge could possibly have served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The site is a place of religious significance and pilgrimage in Neo-Druidry.

VICTORIA FALLS The Victoria Falls is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European to view the Victoria Falls, on 16 November David Livingstone gave the falls the name 'Victoria Falls' in honour of Queen Victoria.

AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP It was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was the largest of the German concentration camps. It is estimated that up to three million people died there. On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops, a day commemorated around the world as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

EASTER ISLAND Easter Island is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle. A special territory of Chile that was annexed in Easter Island is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapanui people.

LOCH NESS Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 km southwest of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume. Its deepest point is 230 m.

TIANANMEN SQUARE Tiananmen Square is a large city square in the center of Beijing, China. It has great cultural significance as it was the site of several important events in Chinese history. Outside China, the square is best known in recent memory as the focal point of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, a pro- democracy movement which ended on 4 June 1989 with the declaration of martial law in Beijing by the government and the death of several hundred civilians.

PALACE OF VERSAILLES The Palace of Versailles or simply Versailles, is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France. In French it is the Château de Versailles. Today, Versailles is a suburb of Paris, some 20 km southwest of the French capital. The court of Versailles was the centre of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States.

AL AQSA MOSQUE Al-Aqsa Mosque (“The Farthest Mosque") is the third holiest site in Islam and is located in the Old City of Jerusalem. The site on which the silver domed mosque sits is the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, the place where the Temple is generally accepted to have stood.
