3 Kultureller Leckerbissen: Freund oder Bekannter? Here in the U.S., the word friend has become the word of choice when describing someone with whom you have any kind of a relationship. It may be your (close) friend from a friendship that started back in kindergarten or your new neighbor with whom you've had a cup of coffee once or twice. We tend to avoid the word acquaintance to describe a relationship.

4 Kultureller Leckerbissen: Freund oder Bekannter? However, in German, it is more common to hear a distinction in the depth of a relationship based upon the word used. The words are: Freund/Freundin = close friend, an adult you would say "du" to. Bekannter/Bekannte = acquaintance. For most adults this is the normal word and implies you would say "Sie" to this person.
