4 Who is St. Nikolaus? The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nikolaus, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara, Greece. His wealthy parents died in an epidemic while Nikolaus was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra.

Who is St. Nikolaus? Am Abend vom 5. Dezember backen Kinder Kekse (cookies). Sie stellen (place) einen Schuh (shoe) draußen (outside) für kleine Geschenke (gifts). Wenn sie brav (well-behaved) waren, bekommen (receive) sie Bonbons (candy), Brezeln (pretzels), Schokolade (chocolate) und Orangen! Sankt Nikolaus hat einen Assistant – Knecht Ruprecht –, der eine Peitsche (whip) für böse (wild/evil) Kinder hat. If they haven’t been well behaved, the children sometimes find a rod (Rute), which is like a switch/whip, or coal (Kohle) in their shoe! Oje oje! Das ist nicht so gut! Alles Gute zum Nikolaustag!
