2 Herausforderungen in Bezug auf den Desktop
Kosten Senken von Bereitstellungskosten Senken der laufenden Wartungskosten Senken der Gesamtbetriebskosten Risiken Hohe und schnelle Investitionserträge Maximieren der Umsatzrendite Erfüllen von Unternehmensanforderungen Zeit Effiziente Nutzung von IT-Ressourcen In today’s business environment, ensuring that organizations are equipped with the right tools to optimize both human and financial capital is of paramount concern. Yet investing in information technology (IT) during uncertain economic times can make even the most seasoned executive pause before signing the check. All of you are concerned with growing bottom-line revenue, controlling costs, and improving operating margin. Yet achieving each, is in part, governed by information worker productivity and improved workflow processes, which if effectively improved by IT, can help ensure that these fundamental business goals are realized. However, when it comes to providing direct financial benefit to an organization, the single most important tools in an information worker’s toolkit—the desktop or notebook PC and the productivity software that he or she uses every day—are often the most overlooked and unrecognized enablers of productivity and greater IT efficiency. In a legitimate effort to control costs, many organizations delay their refresh cycle for new PC hardware and with it the adoption of newer PC operating systems and productivity applications. Although this approach saves hard money that improves the bottom line in the short run, it is often not the best long-term decision. Slower adoption of modern hardware and productivity software can stifle productivity from the workers who provide the greatest financial value to the organization and can cost organizations more money from increased IT support requests, increased PC management costs, ineffective security measures, and other direct and indirect IT costs. 3 Gründe für eine Bereitstellung IT als Wettbewerbsvorteil
Kosten Erhöhen der Effizienz im Unternehmen Geringere Betriebskosten Optimierte Unternehmensprozesse Höhere Mitarbeiterproduktivität Wert Erschließen neuer Wachstumspotenziale Schnellere Markteinführungszeiten Leichterer Zugang zu Daten Neue Arten der Kundenbetreuung Key Points: IT is one of the most strategic assets that any company will have Every dollar spent on IT has to help to do two things: (1) to run the business more efficiently and (2) to drive new areas of growth IT will continue to evolve from a cost center to driver of growth for the business Detail: There was a time when Information Technology was merely a back-office concern. At that time, the job of IT professionals was just to install boxes. The purpose of Information Technology was similar to the heating system – to offer the minimal conditions in which people could work and systems could operate. And those attitudes were reflected in the technology itself. Big systems were built to last -- but they were decidedly not built with an eye on returning high value for the investment or to empower a company to create a new product and take it to market faster than competition. Complex systems were created to meet engineering criteria -- but certainly not to work in a flexible fashion to drive competitive advantage. Times have changed. Business is a COMPLEX virtual dynamic of people, groups, partners, customers—all using different systems, devices, and processes, inside and outside the firewall. Competition has become more fierce than ever, and globalization, consumer sophistication, and the proliferation of IT have all changed business dynamics. Successful companies will leverage IT to run their businesses more effectively and to drive value in new areas. IT has evolved and will continue to evolve from a cost center to a driver of growth for the business—a major source of competitive advantage. IT has to not only drive down IT costs (upfront costs, deployment costs, and general manageability costs), but also drive down overall business costs—streamlining business processes and integrating systems to drive operating efficiency. IT has to help companies get more out of every dollar spent on every expense—Recruiting or Operations or Finance. IT has to simplify the complexity that exists in business today. IT must help unlock all the data that companies have across their organizations and turn that into information—to harness a company’s greatest Asset, knowledge. IT has to help drive customer satisfaction—for example, leveraging IT to drive increased customer responsiveness. IT can and will continue to revolutionize industries and markets by changing the very nature of how customers use a business's products and services. We don’t pretend that there’s a silver bullet answer for how a company can leverage IT to achieve all of these things. Different companies have grown differently— and based upon their culture and core competencies, will need to leverage different IT strategies and architectures to achieve success. We recognize these differences and have developed software that forms the backbone of solutions that help customers remain agile and stay ahead in today’s competitive market—to truly empower companies to drive their own individual IT strategies and ultimately their own destiny.

4 Bereitstellungslösung von Microsoft
Unternehmens- wertstudie und Kosten- berechnung QuickStart- und QuickPlan- Dienste Business Desktop Deployment Solution Accelerator Zero Touch Deployment (Automatische Bereitstellung) Schulungen, Portale und Onlinekurse Microsoft has a 7 step plan for successful deployment and adoption – that will help IT to run the business more efficiently and drive new areas of growth Consistently delivering high-quality technology solutions on-time, on-budget is challenging for any business. The Microsoft 7 step process outlined in this presentation is designed to provide guidance – the proven practices of Microsoft and our customers– to help your organization become more successful delivering business-driven technology solutions to your customers. An innovative aspect of this approach is that it covers the lifecycle of a solution from project inception through to live deployment. This helps project teams focus on customer business value, since no value is realized until the solution is deployed and in operation. The envisioning phase addresses one of the most fundamental requirements for project success—unification behind a common vision. You must have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish and be able to state it in terms that will motivate the IT team and the workforce. Envisioning, by creating a high-level view of the projects goals and constraints, can serve as an early form of planning; it sets the stage for the more formal planning process that will take place during the projects planning phase. During the envisioning phase, business requirements must be identified and analyzed. The evaluation phase is when the IT team evaluates the products or technologies that will be used to build or deploy the solution to ensure that they work according to vendors specifications. This is the initial iteration of an effort that later produces a proof of concept and, ultimately, the development of the solution itself. Another activity that must be completed at this milestone is baselining the environment - conducting an audit of the production environment the solution will be operating in. This includes server configurations, network, desktop software, and all relevant hardware. The planning phase is when the bulk of the planning for the project is completed. You've made the decision to deploy. Now, you investigate features, functionality, and requirements, and correlate them to your existing or proposed system so you can design a solution that meets your needs. This stage includes fleshing out the deployment plan, assigning roles and responsibilities, and creating the schedule. Now that you've planned out a system and process, assemble the tools and resources you need to prepare for deployment. The build phase includes building a test lab, running tests, resolving compatibility issues, and laying out the deployment process. Once you have completed this groundwork, install the system to all desktops and servers, test it, and hand it off to users. The deployment phase includes identifying, investigating and solving problems, checking progress against the plan, and coordinating efforts among various groups or people. After deployment, a project review is conducted and a customer satisfaction survey- by which time, the deployed solution should be providing the expected business value that was envisioned in the first phase. The operations phase is focused on the daily operations and system administration activities to run and maintain the desktops across the enterprise. With your system installed, it's time to move on to running, maintaining, administering, and troubleshooting, and to keep the environment current and operating smoothly. Finally, the adoption phase is concerned with realizing the value of your investment – training IT professionals and end-users to get the most out of the capabilities of the products deployed. To maximize the success of information technology (IT) projects, like Desktop Deployment, Microsoft provides packaged guidance on how to effectively quantify, design, develop, deploy, operate, and support solutions built using Microsoft and some third party technologies. This knowledge comes from Microsoft’s experience with large-scale software development and service operation projects, its consultants experience in conducting projects for enterprise customers, and the best knowledge from the worldwide IT industry.

16 Optimale Wirtschaftlichkeit TVO-Ergebnisse

An agile business uses technology to act quickly and solve problems that were previously unsolvable. Technology in support of business objectives provides the flexibility to readily scale to new business opportunities, overcome or outflank competitive threats, and continuously exceed customer expectations. But when and how does business know if its IT investments will be worth the cost? One way is to ensure that IT investments are measured in business-centric terms. Just as enterprises calculate the costs and benefits of traditional capital investments, they can apply equal rigor in evaluating IT investments. The decision to invest in a solution will be made based on how well the solution meets the needs of the organization. For profit-focused organizations, the decision is based on how much cash, or wealth, the solution returns to the organization. For non-profit organizations, the decision is often made by how much cash is conserved by implementing the solution. In either case, the sponsors will need a clear understanding of the cash flows associated with the proposed solution. Implementation benefits and costs and cash flow statements will be used by senior management to determine the relative worth of an investment. Most IT managers have a good understanding of how to track and measure costs. But measuring the benefits of an IT investment can often be tricky. Traditionally, IT investments were measured by estimating the reduction in labor costs associated with the solution. This approach may not be meaningful in estimating benefits for specific user groups, for example knowledge workers. More appropriate measures of value might include: Increase in productive time for knowledge workers, Reductions in cycle times, Reduction in use of working capital, Reduction in support and infrastructure costs, Reduction in uncertainty or risk of an outcome, Increase in flexibility, Reduced turnover etc. Then the investment potential, or return-on-investment (ROI), can be presented using the prevailing metrics of the organization. Most organizations use Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Average Payback Period (APP) to evaluate investments. The Results This slide presents preliminary findings of business value studies that use the Gartner Total Value of Opportunity (TVO) methodology. The studies were conducted during 2003 at 16 enterprise customer organizations throughout the world. These companies, which represent a variety of sectors in business, government, and education, use a total of more than 500,000 PCs. Preliminary results of these studies indicate that these organizations, five of whose TVO analyses are in process of assessment by Gartner, will experience a median internal rate of return (IRR) of 163% and a median payback period of slightly less than 15 months on their investment in refreshing their client PC infrastructure. This table shows the projected value of investments in Microsoft and Intel technologies made by the 16 organizations profiled in this report. Each organization’s investment was measured as any other capital investment by using time-tested valuation methodologies that conform to generally accepted accounting practices. In each instance, all companies had a positive IRR and a projected payback period from 12 to 18 months. All organizations profiled in this report will adopt solutions based on Microsoft software and Intel Architecture-based hardware. Each organization anticipates a positive return on its investment that will help to reduce operating expenses, significantly improve IT capabilities including reductions in various costs and improved efficiency in various IT processes, and in all instances where it was measured improve the productivity of its information workers. As of August 2003, all organizations intend to deploy their Microsoft and Intel solution either before or during their next hardware refresh cycle. More than 500,000 desktop or laptop PCs will be affected by these deployments. Results presented consist of both partial TVO studies and complete TVO studies that have been assured by Gartner, Inc. The combined averages of each study group are presented to underline key value areas identified by customers, and are not intended to provide exact guidelines on the potential value other customers may be able to achieve. Several tools are available to estimate these costs. For example, the costs of ongoing operation of the new solution can be calculated using chart-of-accounts in GartnerGroup’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analyst or TCO Manager. This can provide the initial and ongoing cash outflows for the projected useful life of the solution. These tools have the advantage of allowing the organization to compare its costs with prevailing industry benchmarks. Microsoft’s business value methods incorporate cost analysis, including total cost of ownership (TCO), but go further to identify the sources of new and existing revenue that IT could bring to the business. These methods are designed to clarify in detail how much value the IT project creates for the organization. These methods also give organizations insight in quantifying the intangible benefits of IT investments, including organizational flexibility, human capital, and ultimately the company’s unique competitive advantages and brand equity. Because providing information workers with the latest PC hardware and software is often not considered to be a strategic investment, the dollar value of these fundamental business tools is not commonly or routinely measured. A successful measurement method must derive business value and return on investment metrics that provide executives with bona fide business tools that can help them make more effective and strategic decisions. To provide the greatest value, the method must take a quantitative and a qualitative approach to ensure that both objective and subjective results are taken into account. For the business value studies presented in this report, Microsoft and Intel turned to Gartner Inc. and its Total Value of Opportunity (TVO) methodology for a consistent and comprehensive approach to valuing the financial benefits of IT investments. Gartner Business Performance Framework™ and Total Value of Opportunity The Gartner TVO methodology, a core component of the Gartner Business Performance Framework developed by Gartner Inc., was designed to help organizations determine the business value of their IT investments. The method provides quantitative and qualitative analytical tools that measure value to both the IT and the business aspects of an organization. Enterprises that evaluate the financial benefits of a PC desktop upgrade from both an IT and business perspective are better positioned to make strategic decisions about the value of a new PC desktop to their organization. Enterprises that seek only to minimize cost are well positioned to realize positive ROI. However, because the investment is viewed only from an IT perspective, the full business value will be realized but not identified or measured. By bridging the IT and business view of IT investments, enterprises that conduct even a partial TVO analysis are better able to understand how a new desktop platform could help them achieve their organizational goals.

Zero touch installation allows partners to automate deployment tasks for image creation and distribution that previously required manual intervention, thereby greatly reducing deployment time and cost. In addition, the zero touch provisioning capability enables partners to built flexible IT Services portal solutions and end users to configure and manage their own desktops, according to the company specific rules set by the IT department. In addition, Microsoft uses a lab on the Microsoft Redmond, WA campus for partners to jointly develop customized desktop solutions based on zero touch. Microsoft recently worked in collaboration with EDS in the lab to help them develop their new myCOE business solution. The zero touch implementation of the Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment enabled EDS to develop a complete desktop services portal that allows users to self-configure their desktops and applications according to their needs at any given time. As a result, the desktop provisioning services for myCOE gives organizations new levels of flexibility for their technology investments, moving fixed costs to variable, and providing greater levels of flexibility to configure services to meet individual user’s needs.
In closing I’d like to make 3 points help to rationalize refreshing your PC desktops to an industry-standard desktop that operates on Windows XP Professional and Office XP or Office 2003: We have made a strong financial justification for upgrading to Windows XP Professional and the Office productivity suite, which can contribute to immediate value and reduces costs. Using objective analysis tools such as the Gartner TVO methodology can help your organization assess both the IT and business benefits of IT investments and more precisely identify where and when that value can be achieved. This is a low-risk strategy because it is based on Microsoft support of a proven productivity platform – and a seven step process and best practices for successful deployment. To maximize the success of information technology (IT) projects, like Business Desktop Deployment, Microsoft provides packaged guidance (BDD SA and Zero Touch) on how to effectively quantify, design, develop, deploy, operate, and support solutions built using Microsoft and some third party technologies. This knowledge comes from Microsoft’s experience with large-scale software development and service operation projects, its consultants experience in conducting projects for enterprise customers, and the best knowledge from the worldwide IT industry. The ability to deploy Windows and Office technologies now offers significant potential for future, optional benefits such as managing information with XML and safeguarding your data with information rights management (IRM), and the ability to get up and running quickly with minimal or no end user training. These benefits can be realized by deploying new capabilities without incurring additional deployment costs.
