3 Motivation bit rate IEEE802.3 evolution 10 Gbps 1 Gbps 100 Mbps time
1995 1999 2001 IEEE802.3 evolution Office Domain Industrial Domain Realtime Wireless From a Communication System point of view a producing company can be divided into a office domain and industrial domain. Because there is a increasing demand for a seamless connectivity between this two domains, industrial ethernet or realtime ethernet is a promising technology for the 2nd generation of industrial communication systems. One important argument of the proponents of using ethernet at the factory floor is to participate in the continously technological evolution of standard ethernet. While Realtime Ethernet is today based on Fast Ethernet with 100 Mbps the IEEE802.3 is going to bit rates above Gigabits per seconds. Therefore we want to discuss in this paper the question: Realtime Ethernet

4 Taxonomie Echtzeit-Ethernet (RTE)
RTE approaches can be classified with this taxonomy consisting three basic classes, which are differentiated by the offered performance and the compatibility to the IEEE802.3 standard. Starting with the first category we use Ethernet and TCP/IP as it is. Only a automation-specific application layer on top of transport Layer is introduced beside the standard tcp or udp based applications. ModBus, Ethernet/IP or FF HSE are representatives of this category. Achievable delivery times are in the range of tens of milliseconds and sufficient for a lot of applications in the industrial automation market. The second class use the prioisation mechanism of IEEE802.1 and a bypass for the RT data to overcome dwell times of the TCP/IP protocol stack and operating system. With this optimization it is possible to achieve delivery times of a few milliseconds. A implementation of this category is more tricky because of the bypass you have schedule the RT and the best-effort channel usinh hardware-dependent software driver. One popular representative is PROFINET RT or Class 1. The third class offers a performance in the sub millisecond range, but need specific scheduling enhancements of ethernet. Typically you need special hardware, so this category have the worst compatibility to native Ethernet. Of course all systems in this category are able to transport IP-based data simultaneously to the realtime data. This category fullfills most prentious applications, like networked control applications. In this paper we want to consider this category.

PROFINET mit IRT Payload H T T H We can divide two basich principles for the frame organization, which are well-known from the fieldbus system, the 1G ICS. The first one is the total frame approach, where we have only one frame, containing the Payload of all distributed devices. Because of saving individual pci the total frame is the most efficient approach, especially if we have a lot of nodes with small payload sizes. EtherCAT is RTE examples, which follows this approach. The second one is based in individual frames. That means the payload to the nodes will be tranported by individual frames. This frames can be distributed among the nodes by using address informations or time scheduled. A representative of this approach is PN IRT. In the following analysis we focus on this both types of frame organisation and take a closer look to Ethercat and PN IRT

PROFINET-Vorteil Optimierungspotential Here we see the ratio between the cycle times od ethercat and profinet as a function of the used payload per device when using fast ethernet. A value smaller 1 indicates a advantage for Ethercat, while a value larger than 1 indicates a advantage for profinet. In this scenario we makes the following assumptions: We consider a moderate sized number of nodes and a cable-based interconnection of 50 meters between two nodes. The forwarding delays are derived from current implementations. We see, that Ethercat is twice as fast as profinet when using small payload sizes, which is typicall in remote-IO secenarios. If the payload size exceeds 60 bytes per node profinet is faster Nutzdaten / Gerät [Byte]

PROFINET-Vorteil Nutzdaten / Gerät [Byte]
