Real time analytics are performed in memory first, but then as that data is no longer needed, keeping it in memory would be very expensive. EMC storage infrastructure allows SAP customers to tier data onto lower cost storage, keeping data online for persistence, but not requiring storing data in memory. The nature of data in HANA is that it is strategic to the needs of the business. Building SAP HANA on EMC infrastructure brings forth all of the backup, recovery and data protection capabilities of EMC infrastructure, and uses the same tools to manage protection for HANA as for other SAP applications Finally,building on the same theme, as SAP evolves the HANA in memory database to support more than just analytics, SAP customers will want to have the right platform built for the future that can support both environments seamlessly and with common management.

The Starter Scale-Out offerings are smaller configurations of the UCS architecture that scale up to 4 active nodes.These low cost configurations are attractive for use in departmental deployments, SMBs, testing and development, and proofs of concept. These appliances support Disaster Tolerance (SAP System Replication)and EMC’s Data Domain enterprise backup appliance. Considering that the BPC is a small system, the HW investment costs in the appliance model, or on physical systems in a TDI model, would be absurd as there would be significant capacity sitting down unused, considering the existing T-Shirt sizes of HANA systems and the database size reduction observed. Also, all operational tasks become a lot easier when working in the virtual world, as automation becomes a lot easier for things like deploying new systems to support the project lifecycle, or manage HA and DR. But the key aspect related with the overall IT Strategy. EMC IT has undertaken a project with code name Propel, that aimed to transform EMC’s internal IT systems towards a cloud operating model. EMC has widely documented this project, and it has become a reference both for SAP and the system integrators who worked with EMC in its implementation. The key results were a dramatic improvement in the service levels provided to the business, toghether with a dramatic reduction of costs and increase in IT Assets utilization. The private cloud operating model has as a foundation characteristic the operation of a virtual datacenter, so whenever new applications enter the portfolio, having them leveraging the existing datacenter setups and operations practices is a must. With this choice of running the SAP BPC system virtualized with Vmware in production, EMC also provided a proff point environment for SAP and Vmware through becoming the first customer with a virtualized HANA setup in production.

In late 2012, EMC IT further transformed their SAP landscape with the adoption of SAP’s in-memory high performance analytics platform, SAP HANA® with a sidecar deployment to support operational reporting. The fact is that one of the key drivers of the EMC IT deployment of HANA relates to the expected performance increases. And in the EMC IT case, running a SAP BPC 10 which was migrated through an OS/DB Migration process to HANA, with no tuning done, there was an immediate 7+ times batch runtime reduction. Remember that the key factor improving performance in the ABAP world is the push of calculations down to the HANA system, which implies updating some of the application code. When the application was updated to push down calculations to HANA, we’ve seen about 400% improvement on the overall system performance. Nevertheless, the fact is that this change brought simplification to the landscape, as it leveraged existing infrastructures, and provided immediate gains to the business by being able to run more simulations and gain better business insights.
