Immer weniger Plastikbeutel werden von den Einkäufern verwendet. b) Mehr Autos werden in der Großstadt auf den Straßen gefahren. c) Mein Fahrrad wird im Winter nicht oft benutzt.

2 What does Passiv show? A process, something that is (being) done.
Emphasis is on what happens to an object rather than who or what does the action. It is not always clear who or what is doing the action. (Mein Fahrrad wird im Winter nicht oft benutzt)

3 Was ist das Passiv? 1. A “voice” = form of the verb that is not a tense (i.e. past, present or future) and not a “mood” (i.e. subjunctive or indicative). 2. It is possible to have past or future passive, as well as subjunctive passive.

4 Passiv kommt von dem Aktiv: How are active and passive sentences related?
1. Aktiv: Die Schüler schreiben die Prüfung. Passiv: Die Prüfung wird von den Schülern geschrieben.   

5 Wie ist der Passiv-Satz?
2. Aktiv: Wir sortieren die Flaschen nach Farbe. Passiv: Die Flaschen werden von uns nach Farbe sortiert. The passive sentence may indicate who or what does the action. This is called the “agent.” (von uns)

6 Modals can be used in passive constructions: (Modal + Infinitiv!)
Die Hausaufgaben müssen gemacht werden. Das Altglas soll nach Farbe sortiert werden. Umweltfreundliches Papier kann aus Altpapier hergestellt werden. Wie heißt das auf Englisch? The homework must be done. The recyclable glass should be sorted according to color. Paper that is good for the environment can be produced from used paper.
