From an IDC study, in 2010 there were 1.2 zettabytes of information. That’s a trillion billion—a massive amount of information to be managed. It is estimated that by 2020, there will be 60 zettabytes of information. Our data deluge will grow 50-times this decade. This growth is putting a strain on backup windows, storage costs, and management. IT organizations are not dissatisfied with the amount of money they’re spending on their IT, but rather with the fact that nearly three-quarters, or 73 percent, goes to maintaining existing legacy systems, both infrastructure and applications. Customers complain about the complexity of their backup solutions. The feeling is that too much time, expertise, and effort is spent keeping the current recovery system(s) afloat. They want the backup process to be less costly, and need less supervision and administrative attention. Infrastructure is the foundation of IT so that’s what changes first. In 2009, an important trend began whereby virtual servers were being delivered in greater numbers than physical servers, that is, we have reached a tipping point. Server virtualization changes the environment in both subtle and profound ways. In many shops today, backup methods have been barely altered to accommodate this new virtual infrastructure so it’s important to lay the proper data protection foundation early on. And now customers must ensure compliance with regulatory and litigation requirements and can no longer rely on past traditional practice of simply keeping tape backups around for years and years. Avamar starts by dividing data into variable-length sub-file segments. It compresses them and applies a unique hash identifier to each one. Then it can determine if that segment has ever been backed up before or whether it‘s unique and needs to be backed up. If the data has been backed up previously, either from this client, or any other—physical or virtual—then Avamar will not back it up again. This is why we say, “Never back up the same data twice.” Using this process, Avamar routinely reduces data by up to 99 percent before backing it up. This can have a huge impact. Also, the data that is truly new and unique is sent across the network compressed, which again helps with bandwidth management on both backups and recoveries. And it’s also encrypted, which ensures the security of the data while it’s in transit as well as when it is at rest. There’s a great deal of confusion about deduplication ratios. Keep in mind that an Avamar daily backup, which is what we’re looking at in this chart, amounts to a full backup so these numbers are in comparison to doing a daily full backup. Also, keep in mind that with any backup, including Avamar, you will store the initial full backup, plus the changes. Avamar does deduplicate within the initial full and can get you up to 70 percent reduction, depending on how much duplication exists. Still, when evaluating storage capacity, which EMC can help you do, you need to take into account primary data, plus retention policies. Avamar’s savings are dramatic here, too. In traditional backup scenarios, EMC has seen customers require storage that’s 10 times or even 25 times their primary data—to store several months’ worth of weekly full and daily incremental backups. Avamar might require one, two, or three times, and will deliver the same retention periods, plus much easier restores. Now, let’s look at the chart specifically… Avamar has industry-leading deduplication technology, and the numbers in this chart are based on real-world customer examples. As you can see, depending on your data mix, you’ll get different levels of data deduplication. For Windows and UNIX file systems environments, where there is a lot of duplication of operating systems, applications, and at the file level, you will see the highest levels of data deduplication. When it comes to a mix of file systems and databases, deduplication levels are slightly lower, but still impressive. While the numbers are impressive overall, it’s really the benefits that companies achieve when using Avamar that’s exciting. You can achieve new levels of data protection in historically problematic areas for backup and recovery, while driving improved total cost of ownership. Note to Presenter: The most important point about deduplication ratios—both for competitive products and EMC’s—is that results may vary. The amount of deduplication achievable depends on a number of factors, including type of deduplication (file-based, sub-file, etc.), retention policies, data change rates, and data types. In order to ensure protection from site disasters, backup images need to be copied to a secondary site. Traditionally, organizations have shipped backup tapes to secure sites and then retrieved those tapes when needed to complete a site recovery. Increasingly tight recovery SLAs have forced many companies to try to speed up the recovery process. As a result, backup replication over networks is emerging as a preferred method for protection from site disasters. But many times, either there’s simply too much data to replicate—and/or the network is insufficient to support the replication process within a reasonable amount of time. And, as you can imagine, the investment in increasing bandwidth capacity can be very significant. Performing deduplication for backup, then replicating the deduplicated data is a good strategy for making data recovery more feasible and economical. The reduced backup image resulting from deduplication directly reduces the amount of content needed at the secondary site. Backup deduplication directly lowers the infrastructure, time, operational overhead, and bandwidth costs needed to create backup images at the disaster recovery site. In addition, disk-to-disk backup replication obviously eliminates the risks associated with shipping physical tape cartridges. Traditional backup typically consists of a weekly full backup followed by a daily incremental backup. This backup process consistently sends redundant files/data for backup. As the amount of data in the company’s environment grows, so does the backup window. The restore process is also very time consuming. The backup administrator must first restore the most recent weekly full backup to a disk staging area, and then restore each of the daily incremental backups. Finally a temporary environment contains the latest week of data so the file/files/folder/ DB/etc. can be restored. If the backup tapes are offsite, it may take up to 24 hours to complete this process. With Avamar, deduplication is part of the backup process. Avamar applies its variable-length deduplication algorithm to identify only unique changed blocks. It does this on a daily basis and creates a daily full backup in a fraction of the time compared to traditional backup. Customers typically see a 95 percent reduction in backup windows and 99 percent reduction in network traffic during the backup process. Avamar also provides a single-step restore process from disk – the data is always at your fingertips. Recovery time can be minutes compared to many hors or even days with traditional backup. With Avamar, you can recover reliably. Companies require high availability solutions and guaranteed recoverability of data, and Avamar delivers with a valuable set of patented technologies. Avamar uses patented Redundant Array of Independent Nodes, or RAIN technology, to deliver high availability. RAIN works in a very similar way to RAID. If you lose an Avamar server node, Avamar can read/write around that, which means backups and restores can continue without interruption. Avamar uses a grid architecture, which makes it easy to increase performance or disk capacity in a very granular fashion, and data is automatically load-balanced across all the available resources in the grid. The Avamar server automatically checks itself twice daily using internal checkpoints. If a problem is detected, the server will roll back to a previous checkpoint. Also, Avamar verifies that backup data is fully recoverable, automatically every day—so there are no surprises when a recovery is needed. And of course, there is also RAID protection in each of Avamar’s servers. These high-availability features ensure that Avamar provides the reliability that companies of all sizes require. The fourth generation of the Avamar Data Store purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) provides four node sizes: 1.3 TB, 2.6 TB, 3.9 TB, and 7.8 TB. Each of these nodes can be used as single replicated nodes. To build a RAIN grid, only the 3.9 TB and 7.8 TB nodes can be used. The same holds true for small remote offices; no extra hardware or backup storage is required, thus reducing costs and management overhead.  For larger sites, you may choose to back up locally to an Avamar single node or to the Avamar Virtual Edition for fast local backup and recovery. This enables faster recovery of a large amount of data without having to traverse the WAN. Replication to the data center is required to ensure disaster recovery criteria are met.  For virtualized environments, Avamar is optimized to provide application-consistent backups through guest-level agents, as well as bare metal recovery from agentless image-level backup.

Avamar can create extended retention for any data it stores to the Avamar Data Store or the Data Domain system by exporting that data to the Media Access Node and then onto a VTL or tape. Avamar will also enable a restore VTL or tape by importing directly to the system designated (and containing the Avamar Client agent). The Media Access Node is a new node type in the Data Store Gen4 family, and different from all others. There are a two specifications that could be relevant here: the connector type and speed of the Fibre Channel interface. All software is hosted on the Media Access Node: Administrative/monitoring user interface Streaming engine Library management Restore server The single-step process of moving data to VTL and tape is a read-only operation from Avamar. This does not expire data on the grid (that is under exclusive control of Avamar backup policy). Avamar exports any backup data it has written to an Avamar Data Store, Avamar Virtual Edition, or a Data Domain system. The exported data contains all data in native format, and then compresses it to reduce size. The Media Access Node will then send this exported data to only a SCSI-based tape library or Virtual Tape Library (VTL). A Data Domain system with the Data Domain Virtual Tape Library software option is the VTL of choice. EMC Data Domain Virtual Tape Library software, available for all Data Domain systems, emulates multiple tape libraries over a Fibre Channel interface. Optionally, in addition to using the DD VTL software, one can also leverage the Data Domain Extended Retention software option for environments requiring years of backup retention. DD Extended Retention, available for the DD860 or DD990, extends the Data Domain architecture with an internal tiering approach designed to enable cost-effective, long-term retention of backup data on deduplicated disk. Please note that only the DD VTL software option (not DD Extended Retention) is required to send data from the Avamar Media Access Node to the Data Domain system through Fibre Channel.
