2 Germersheim ist unter anderem bekannt für seine Festung. Die Anlagen der Festung wurden 1834 -1861 errichtet und waren Teil eines Festungssystems im Westen Deutschlands zum Schutz vor befürchteten französischen Angriffen. Germersheim is among other things famouse for ist fortress. It was built 1834- 1861 and was part of a system of fortresses in West Germany as a protection against attacks of the French. Die Festung

3 Die ehemalige Seysselkaserne ist heute Universität für Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft. The former barrack is now a University for translation studies, linguistics and cultural studies.

4 Das Ludwigstor ist eines der beiden Stadttore und darin untergebracht ist das Stadt- und Festungsmuseum. The Ludwigstor is one of two town gates and in it you find the town and fortress museum.

5 Auf einem historischen Schild heißt es : „Brücken und Tore dürfen von Reitern und Fuhrwerken nur im Schritt passiert werden“. On a historical sign it says : “ Bridges and gates may only be passed by riders and wagons at a walking-pace“.

6 Das Kriegerdenkmal ist den Gefallenen der Stadt während des ersten und des zweiten Weltkrieges gewidmet. The war memorial is dedicated to the fallen people during the first and the second world war.

7 Dieses hufeisenförmige Gebäude ist ein Teil der ehemaligen Festugsanlage Fronte Beckers und beherbergt heute die Musikschule und das Jugendzentrum. 8 Die Stengelkaserne ist auch Teil der Festung und wie es auf den Schildern heißt ist der Zutritt nur für Berechtigte, da es militärischer Bereich ist. The Stengelkaserne is a barrack and part of the fortress. As you can read on the signs the admittance is for beneficiaries only, because it is military area.

9 Octroi-lodge From 1843 until 1924 octroi and market charges were claimed for the town. The Octroi was a consumption tax on groceries, semiluxury food and heating fuel. Market charges had to be paid for the imported goods for the weekly market. Lateron here was the weighbridge and the office of weighs and measures.
