Stock, Hotel Carcassonne, 24, Rue Mouffetard, Paris 5, steht rechts neben der Tür zwischen Gaskocher und Ausguß, ein Tisch, den V ERA einmal blau angestrichen hat, um mich zu überraschen. Hier in diesem Buch will ich versuchen festzuzhalten, was die Gegenstände mir sagen, die ich heute, 17. Oktober 1961, um 15 Uhr 45, auf der einen Hälfte des Tisches finde [ich hätte daraus ein Fallenbild (D.S. 1 + Anh. II) machen können], und die allerlei Erinnerungen und Assoziationen hervorrufen. S HERLOCK H OLMES mag ähnlich vorgegangen sein, wenn er anhand eines einzigen Gegenstandes die Umstände eines Verbrechens (An. III) aufzudecken versuchte, oder jene Archäologen in Pompeji – dem berühmtesten Fallenobjekt der Geschichte – eine ganze Epoche rekonstruieren könnten. (…) Auf einem Faltblatt im Innern dieses Buches findet man eine Planzeichnung, deren umregelmäßiger Umriß der Form des blauen Tisches entspricht (D.R. 2.). (…) Die Zeichnung ist die genaue Topographie der von Zufall und Unordnung bestimmten Tischlandschaft und zeigt die nummerierten Grundrisse aller besprochenen Gegenstände. Das Spiel, das ich nun vorschlage, besteht darin, sich auf dieser Karte einen Gegenstand auszusuchen und dann die Beschreibung dieses Gegenstandes unter der entsprechenden Nummer im Textteil nachzuschlagen.“
