The Genitive Case This case has three uses: USE #1: To show possession or that something is an integral part of something else. z.B. The mans dog has just eaten our rabbit. Der Hund des Mannes hat gerade unser Kanninchen gefressen.

e.g. I dont like the colour of the door. Ich mag nicht die Farbe der Tür. e.g. I heard the screaming of the child. Ich hörte das Schreien des Kindes. NOTE: Masculine and neuter nouns add s or es to the end when in Genitive case. Add es for a 1-syllable word, and s for a word with more than one syllable! –z–z.B. der Ring Preis des Ringes der Fernseher Größe des Fernsehers

It translates as of the, of my etc. Ich mag den Freund meines Bruders. I like my brother s friend. Literally ~ I like the friend of my brother.

USE #2To express phrases of time beginning with one, like one day, one fine day. These are: eines Tages(eines schönen Tages) eines Morgens eines Nachmittags eines Abends einer Nacht.

USE #3 There are also a few prepositions which always have to be followed by this case.

wegenbecause of trotzdespite, in spite of währendduring stattinstead of There are others, but we ll just work with these so far!

Beispiele: 1.Trotz des schlechten Wetters ging er hinaus. 2. Er kam wegen eines Unfalls(=accident) zu spät. 3. Statt eines Pullis kaufte sie eine Jacke. 4. Er schlief während des Unterrichts(=class/lecture) ein. (He went outside despite the bad weather). (He arrived late because of an accident). (She bought a jacket instead of a sweater). (He fell asleep during the lecture).

So how do I use it?

When using GENITIVE case, you must change the articles of certain words... (Remember: Articles are the words for THE and A.)...just like you would for Accusative or Dative Case!

MascFemNeutPlural Nomderdiedasdie Accdendiedasdie Datdemderdemden GENdesderdesder THE words: Definite Articles = Der/Die/Das

A words: Indefinite Articles = Ein/Eine etc MascFemNeutPlural Nomeineineeinkeine Acceineneineeinkeine Dateinemeinereinemkeinen GENeineseinereineskeiner

Wie sagt man auf Englisch? 1)der Titel des Buchs 2)die Stimme des Lehrers 3)das Auto meiner Mutter 4)der Fußballspieler des Jahres

Ergänze: Masculine and neuter nouns which have one __________ add es in the genitive case. Add just s for masculine and neuter nouns with _________.

Use the genitive 1)das Geld ~ mein Vater 2)die Risiken ~ das Skilaufen 3)die Kosten ~ der Urlaub 4)die Schönheit ~ die Natur 5)der Vorteil ~ der Computer

The GENITIVE also affects the possessives:

mascfemneutplural nommeinmeinemeinmeine accmeinenmeinemeinmeine datmeinemmeinermeinemmeiner genmeinesmeinermeinesmeiner

mascfemneutplural nom der Mann die Frau das Kind die Kinder gen des Mannes der Frau des Kindes der Kinder gen meines Mannes meiner Frau meines Kindes meiner Kinder
