In this unit you will: Learn vocabulary for talking about relationships Learn vocabulary for various emotions Review how to use relative pronouns Learn about the relationship between East and West Germany in the past and among their former citizens today

Kultureller Leckerbissen: Freund oder Bekannter? Here in the U.S., the word friend has become the word of choice when describing someone with whom you have any kind of a relationship. It may be your (close) friend from a friendship that started back in kindergarten or your new neighbor with whom you've had a cup of coffee once or twice. We tend to avoid the word acquaintance to describe a relationship.

Kultureller Leckerbissen: Freund oder Bekannter? However, in German, it is more common to hear a distinction in the depth of a relationship based upon the word used. The words are: Freund/Freundin = close friend, an adult you would say "du" to. Bekannter/Bekannte = acquaintance. For most adults this is the normal word and implies you would say "Sie" to this person.

Starting a Sentence with Subordinating Conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions kick the verb to the end of the clause Weve combined sentences by using subordinating conjunctions BETWEEN two clauses Wann bist du entspannt? Ich bin entspannt, wenn ich am Strand liege. What happens if we START the sentence with our subordinate conjunction?

Starting a Sentence with Subordinating Conjunctions Step 1 Conjunction still kicks its verb to the end of the clause Step 2 Then comes a comma Step 3 Then comes the conjugated verb from the OTHER clause Think: Verb – Comma - Verb
