Conditional This used to say what would happen under certain circumstances or if not for other circumstances The conditional tense consists of a form of werden followed by the infinative ich würdewir würden du würdestihr würdet er/sie würde sie/Sie würden Wir würden mehr Zeit vor dem Fernseher verbringen

When to use it? The conditional tense is being used increasingly in the place of the subjunctive. Sie würden das Haus nicht kaufen- they would not buy the house The conditional is also used as a polite request Würden Sie bitte warten? NOTE: The conditional is never used for haben or sein!!

The Subjunctive Mood We all already use this in the modal verbs without realising it Ich möchte (would like)- this is a form of the subjunctive verb The subjunctive is not a tense as it can be used throughout the tenses The subjunctive is used as an alternative to the conditional tense and is mostly used with modals or in indirect speech and haben/sein

Subjunctive Ich habe Geld- this sentence indicates what? The subjunctive does the opposite It tells the reader what they would have done had they had the money Hätte ich das Geld, würde ich nach Europa fahren A Fact

How is the subjunctive formed? Usually formed by putting the verb in to the imperfect tense and adding an umlaut (if possible) and adding an e if there is already not one. *** Exception is sollen and wollen- no umlaut is added PresentImperfectSubjunctive habenhattehätte mögenmochtemöchte gehengingginge seinwarwäre

Most commonly used with They often include clauses with wenn haben/sein and modal verbs Ich hätte das Besser machen können Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich ins Kino gegangen Ich möchte das machen All other Verbs generally used the conditional instead Wenn das Wetter schön wäre, würden wir zum Strand gehen

Subjunctive in other tenses Hättest du Lust, mit uns zu gehen? Ich wäre gern mit euch gegangen = present = past

Can you tell the difference? Ich würde es kaufen, wenn ich genug Geld habe Ich hätte mein Hausaufgaben gemacht, wenn ich genug Zeit hätte Es wäre besser für mich gewesen, wenn ich hätte absagen können Wenn das Wetter schön wäre, würden wir wandern gehen = conditional = subjunctive = conditional and subjunctive

Your turn If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it If we had time, we would be able to go to the movies If I won 2,000 Euro, I would fly to London Wenn ich es nicht mit eingnen Augen gesehen hätte, hätte ich es nicht geglaubt Wenn wir Zeit hätte, würden wir ins Kino gehen Wenn ich 2,000 Euro winnen würde, würde ich sofort nach London fliegen
