Kapitel 4: Die Schule Deutsch 1 Making words plural Kapitel 4: Die Schule Deutsch 1

To begin with… Nouns do not all change in the same way in the plural form. To make words plural in German, you need to follow the “codes” There are many patterns, but you must learn to make the words plural at the same time you learn the gender.

More information… z.B. die Fahne, -n  die Fahnen All nouns change their article (der, die, das) to “die” in the plural form. z.B  der Bleistift, -e  die Bleistifte [the pencils] The “-e” is the plural “code” z.B. die Fahne, -n  die Fahnen das Buch, -¨er  die Bücher

The Rules First, change the article to “die” Second, the (-)hyphen tells us to rewrite the word Then add the letter and/or the umlaut to the end of the word. z.B. die Tür, -en  die Türen (the doors) der Rucksack,-¨e  die Rucksäcke (the backpacks)

More rules! If there is a –¨, then the umlaut always goes on the vowel closest to the end [must be a, o, u] z.B  der Eingang, -¨e  die Eingänge If there is an “au” combination, then the umlaut goes on the “a” z.B  das Haus, -¨er die Häuser Note: some words do not change in their plural form except for the article “die” z.B  der Schüler  die Schüler das Mädchen  die Mädchen der Lehrer  die Lehrer

Üben wir! Make the following words plural!

More practice. How many school supplies do these students have More practice. How many school supplies do these students have? Follow the model. z.B. Ich / 4 / Stuhl = Ich habe 4 Stühle. Marco / 2 / Rucksack = Der Leher/ 2 / Buch= Die Klasse / 4 / Wand= Du / 3 / Papierkorb= Felix / 6 / Bleistift= Bruno und Johann / 4 / Heft = Marco hat 2 Rucksäcke. Der Lehrer hat 2 Bücher. Die Klasse hat 4 Wände. Du hast 3 Papierkörbe. Felix hat 6 Bleistifte. Bruno und Johann haben 4 Hefte.
