What is the passive? When you are talking about an action, and are more interested in the action than in who (i.e. the subject) is doing it, you will tend.

In its original meaning, werden means to become (or to get). Es wird kalt. (Its getting cold.) Ihre Kinder werden groß. (Your children are getting big.) Am Montag werde ich endlich 21. (Im finally turning 21 on Monday.) Meine Schwester will Rechtsanwälte werden. (My sister wants to become a lawyer.)

werden + infinitive = future tense Es wird heute Abend regnen. It will rain this afternoon. Ich werde morgen mein Zimmer aufräumen. I will straighten up my room tomorrow. Sie werden uns wieder besuchen. They will visit us again.

Using the subjunctive form of werden (würden) with an infinitive means the same as the present subjunctive form of the infinitive. Ich kaufte diesen Mantel nicht. = Ich würde diesen Mantel nicht kaufen. =I wouldnt buy this coat.

The indicative form of werden + a past participle = passive voice. You can use the indicative form of werden in any tense to convey the correct passive meaning. I

Active – the subject is the agent/performer Passive – the subject is the object of the action Donald spielt Musik. Donald plays music. Donald plays music. Musik wird [von Donald] gespielt. Music is played [by Donald]. Donald].

Musik war gespielt worden. Musik ist gespielt worden. Musik wurde gespielt. Musik wird gespielt. Musik wird gespielt werden. *In the perfect tenses of the passive voice, the normal participle of werden (geworden) is shortened to just worden. (See examples above.)

Man liest diese Zeitung oft. (lesen = active verb in present tense; diese Zeitung = object) Diese Zeitung wird oft gelesen. (diese Zeitung becomes subject and verb is put in passive voice) Die Kinder räumen das Zimmer jeden Abend auf. (aufräumen = active verb in present tense; das Zimmer = object) Das Zimmer wird jeden Abend aufgeräumt. (das Zimmer becomes subject and verb is put in passive voice) Im 19. Jahrhundert schrieb man viele Romane. (schreiben = active verb in simple past; viele Romane = object) Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden viele Romane geschreiben. (viele Romane becomes subject and verb is put in passive voice) Man hat die wichtigsten Politker eingeladen. (einladen = active verb in perfect tense; die Politiker = object) Die wichtigsten Politiker sind eingeladen worden. (die Politiker becomes subject and verb is put in passive voice) Im Konferenz wird dieses Thema besprechen. (besprechen = active verb in future tense; dieses Thema = object) Im Konferenz wird dieses Thema besprochen worden. (dieses Thema becomes subject and verb is put in passive voice)

werden - In present indicative, it simply means to become. Es wird schwer. werden (in present indicative) + infinitive = future tense Ich werde das machen. werden (in present subjunctive) + infinitive = subjunctive/conditional Ich würde ein Haus kaufen. werden (in any tense of the indicative) + past particple = passive voice Es wird gemacht.

1. Ich will Professorin werden. 2. Ich werde Professorin werden. 3. Ich würde meine Doktorarbeit machen, wenn ich Zeit hätte. 4. Meine Doktorarbeit wird bald gemacht. 5. Meine Doktorarbeit würde dieses Jahr fertig gewesen werden.
