Hoffmann von Fallersleben was a German poet and lived from 1798 to 1874. He is best known as the writer of “Das Lied der Deutschen”. The third stanza is Germany’s national anthem today. He also wrote a lot of children’s poetry such as the following...

Activity 1 Work with a partner. Read the poem again and decide whether the following statements are true or false. Look for evidence in the text. Winter has just begun. It is warm outside. The poem reminds us not to forget the poor. Children are unhappy at winter time. The poem mentions ice-skating.
