Das Perfekt Wiederholen (hoffentlich!)

Think of 5 things you did in your holidays but think of sentences in the PRESENT TENSE. 1.Am Montag schlafe ich viel. 2.Ich spiele Fußball. 3.Am Dienstag Abend fahren meine Familie und ich nach Melbourne. 4.Ich spiele am Wochenende Computer. 5.Am Mittwoch essen wir Maccas. NOTE THE POSITION OF THE VERB – IT IS ALWAYS 2 ND (the 2 nd idea)!

This is how those sentences look in the PERFECT TENSE (sometimes known as 2 word past tense) 1. Am Montag schlafe ich viel. Am Montag habe ich viel geschlafen. 2. Ich spiele Fußball. Ich habe Fußball gespielt. 3. Am Dienstag Abend fahren meine Familie und ich nach Melbourne. sind gefahren Am Dienstag Abend sind meine Familie und ich nach Melbourne gefahren. 4. Ich spiele am Wochenende Computer. Ich habe am Wochenende Computer gespielt. 5. Am Mittwoch essen wir Maccas. gegessen Am Mittwoch haben wir Maccas gegessen.

Basic Rules for using the Perfect Tense: You need to use: haben OR sein + ge ________ t (or an irregular past participle like gegessen, gefahren) Ich habe Fußball gespielt. Er hat Fußball gespielt. Ich bingefahren Ich bin nach Melbourne gefahren. Wir sindgefahren Wir sind nach Melbourne gefahren.

Weak or Regular verbs: always use haben the past participle is always formed by dropping the en from the verb and adding ge________t: spielen spiel gespielt machen mach gemacht Note: besuchen besuch besucht

Strong or Irregular Verbs pt 1: First question to ask yourself, is there movement or a change in condition? If not, use haben plus the past participle listed in any German dictionary. Ich habe gestern gesungen. (singen) Wir haben das gedacht. (denken)

Strong or Irregular verbs pt 2: if there IS movement or a change in condition, use sein and the past participle: Ich bin schnell gelaufen. Wir sind nach Melbourne gefahren. Klaus ist nach Deutschland geflogen. Note: Ich bin nach Perth gereist.

Fragen?

Does the verb you are using take sein or haben? (Is there movement or a change in state?) Make sure you use the right auxiliary verb! Is it a regular verb? (check your verb list/dictionary) Yes Past participle is ge________t, but if a verb starts with be-, er-, ver-, or ends in –ieren, omit the ge-. No Most irregular past participles end in –en (check with your verb list through). Learn them by heart! Remember to put the past participle at the end of the clause!
