Los! With your partners, complete the sheet on your desk Use the examples to help you translate the sentences EXTRA: think about the difference between sentence 5 and sentences 1-4

What? Why? Learning outcomes understand what the perfect tense is and how to use it to make perfect tense sentences with “haben” and “sein” verbs to use more complex word order with perfect tense Why?

Which of these sentences do you think are in the perfect tense? Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren Ich habe Bonbons gekauft Ich spiele Tennis Ich habe Musik gehört Ich bin in die Stadt gegangen Ich gehe ins Kino

Which ingredients do we need to make a “perfect” burger? There are ALWAYS at least 3 parts: 1. The top of the bun: the subject 2. The burger: the bit of “haben” or “sein” 3. The bottom of the bun: the past participle The pronoun (person) The correct bit of haben or sein Anything else A past participle

An example of a Perfect Burger I played tennis The subject (person) Ich The correct bit of haben or sein habe Anything else Tennis A past participle gespielt

But how do I make a past participle? Regular verbs follow a pattern Take the infinitive  spielen Chop off the ‘en’  spielen Add a ‘ge’ at the beginning  gespiel Add a ‘t’ at the end  gespielt Make these verbs into past participles! kaufen (to buy) machen (to do/make) hören (to listen to) faulenzen (to laze about) surfen (to surf)

Do all past participles work like this? In a word – NO! There are some irregular past participles – most of these end in –en. You will have to learn these verbs as they don’t follow the pattern of regular past participles. schreiben  geschrieben sehen  gesehen nehmen  genommen essen  gegessen trinken  getrunken

But when do we use ‘haben’ for the burger and when do we use ‘sein’? Almost all verbs use “haben”! Sein A few verbs use “sein”, these are usually verbs of movement. Their past participles are also irregular!  gehen (gegangen) to go fahren (gefahren) to travel bleiben (geblieben) to stay schwimmen (geschwommen) to swim reiten (geritten) to horse-ride

Perfect Tense Swag Bag!

Los! Correct the sentences and say WHY you have changed something: Ich bin gegangen einkaufen Er habe Schokolade gegessen Ich habe Cola getrinken Wir gefahren nach London Gestern du haben Musik gehören

What? Why? Learning outcomes understand what the perfect tense is and how to use it to make perfect tense sentences with “haben” and “sein” verbs to use more complex word order with perfect tense Why?

Making burgers! Make a burger for each of these sentences! Be careful, as some of these verbs use “sein”! I bought a DVD I swam* I went to the park* (to the = zum) I listened to music at the weekend I stayed in a hotel last year I watched TV yesterday EXTENSION: add past tense time phrases to the start of these sentences. Think about word order

Feedback Making the “perfect” burger! A. Explain what the perfect is used for and the different parts of the “perfect” burger. B. Give an example of a simple perfect sentence. C. Give an example of a more complex perfect sentence, including a time phrase
