There are 2 ways to form questions in German… Either…invert the word order and start with the verb…. (Kennst du Marta?) Or start with a question word… (Wo wohnt Marta?) We will start with the first one… inverting the word order.

Forming a Question without using a Question Word: When there is no Question word, you MUST use the inverted word order z.B  Statement: Du kommst spät -You come late. Question: Kommst du spät? -Are you coming late? Wohnt Herr Riebe in Hamburg? -Does Mr. Riebe live in Hamburg? Ist Jürgen zu Hause? –Is Jürgen home? Kennst du Tina? –Do you know Tina?

Forming a Question Cont’d… Formation of questions in German is easier than in English!! Because English uses a form of the phrase “to do” (Do you learn German?, does he play guitar?, etc.) German does not—you just skip right to the verb: Lernst du Deutsch? Spielst du Gitarre?
