Gefallen (to please, to be pleasing to) Gefallen is used to express liking, but is very different from,,gern haben or,,mögen,,Gern haben and,,mögen express liking the direct object (ich habe die Klasse gern or ich mag die Klasse) With gefallen, it is the dative object that does the liking… And it is the subject of the sentence that is liked…

Confused? Its OK. Most of the time you will only see 2 forms of gefallen: _______gefällt + dative pronoun/form _______gefallen + dative pronoun/form z.B. Das Hemd gefällt mir. Das Hemd is singularit is pleasing to me. 1 Hemd = er/sie/es form of gefallen

More examples…. z.B. Diese Jeans gefallen mir. These jeans (are pleasing to me)./ I like these jeans. This time the jeans are plural, therefore we use the plural form of gefallen! z.B. Gefallen dir die Blusen? Nein, die Blusen gefallen mir nicht, aber die Jacke gefällt mir sehr gut.

Also… Another funky thing… You can switch things around… z.B. Mir gefällt dieses Hemd.Or Mir gefallen diese Socken. It would work the same way for other dative forms: Gefällt John diese Jacke? Nein, diese Jacke gefällt ihm nicht.

Other verbs that follow this pattern (particularly as it pertains to our unit): Passen and stehen follow the same patterns: Das Kleid passt dir gut. Der Hut steht dir gut. Die Klamotten passen dir gut. Die Schuhe stehen mir gut. singularsing. verb plural plural verb

Lets practice…. Ask your partner these questions using the picture prompts; answer negatively and respond that you like the 2 nd item using the picture prompt. z.B. Schüler A: Gefällt dir diese Bluse? Schüler B: Nein, mir gefällt diese Bluse nicht, aber mir gefällt der Pulli da drüben.

Now find out if these items fit well or not… follow the model. z.B. Der Rock / zu eng Schüler A: Passt dir der Rock? Schüler B: Nein, leider nicht. Er ist zu eng. OR: (sample positive answers) Ja! Er passt mir gut!/ Er ist perfekt!/ Der Rock ist die richtige Größe; ich nehme ihn.
