Over the past 7 years the scalability of Windows has increased 201 times while the cost per transaction has dropped to 1/17th the price. While a customer may not require this level of scalability they can be assured that Windows based solutions may be deployed at the lowest cost at all levels of scalability. Was Kunden von uns verlangen … “Reduce impact of malware” Isolation and Resiliency “Simplify critical maintenance ” Improve Updating “Develop reliable and secure software” Engineering Excellence “Give us better access control” ” (SLIDE GOAL: First establish credibility with this technical audience by acknowledging how broad and deep a set of work “security issues” covers, then focus in on key customer scenarios/requests per the slide.) “In developing and refining our approach to security over the past few years, the largest set of stakeholders that have influenced us is YOU and other CUSTOMERS. Security sometimes seems too simple a term for the many aspects of business and information technology that it touches. Even just looking at security from an IT viewpoint, we want to protect networks, systems, data, processes and users. For each of those areas, people, processes and technology are necessary to manage the security business risk. In the 3 tracks following the keynote today, we will start to touch on how to practically approach IT security issues. For my part of the day, and the rest of my conversation with you, I am going to focus on 5 issues that customers have identified as top areas of concern, and talk about what steps Microsoft is taking to help make progress in each area: Reduce the impact of malware – Isolation and resiliency Simplify critical maintenance – Improve software updating Develop reliable and secure software – Engineering excellence Better Access control – Authentication, authorization and access control Better guidance – Security guidance, tools and responsiveness BRIDGE: First, let’s look at Isolation and Resiliency Authentication, Authorization, Access Control “Provide better guidance ” Deliver Security Guidance, Tools, Responsiveness

Genereller Stand des SQL Servers Über 1,3 Mio installierte SQL Server Durchschnittliche Wachstumsrate von 50% pro Jahr in den letzten 10 Jahren #1 im BI Bereich TPs: SQL Server has seen tremendous growth over the last few years Microsoft’s 4th largest business (can/should we say that?) at $1.5B in revenue Grew at 37% last year while overall DBMS market has seen decline (declined 6% in 2002 per gartner/dataquest). Our CAGR over the last 9 years is 51% (per finance based on data from MSSales which dates to FY94. this is on billed, fully allocated revenue) Over 1.3 million servers deployed with SQL Server (note: current estimate per finance based on MS Sales data but this is likely to be revised in the future) SQL Server is the clear leader/db of choice for Windows with 45% share of the Windows RDBMS market Also seen significant growth in the Business Intelligence space over the last few years – seen our market share of OLAP increase from 0% in 1998 to the leadership position with 24% of the market in 2002 (source: OLAP Report) Validates the strengths/differentiation of SQL Server: highly manageable, integrated DB and analysis offering with low TCO Transition to next slide – with the gains we have made in enterprise class performance and scalability (as seen in TPC data in slide 7), we’ve also seen our customers and partners deploying their largest databases on SQL Server

More than 20 SQL Server customers were included on ten TopTen lists in the survey, which means customers on the lists chose SQL Server more than any other Windows-based database provider. Moreover, ten winners were in the "All Environments" category (Unix and Windows), which includes the largest databases in the world. And according to the results, SQL Server runs the world's largest database for transaction processing on the Microsoft Windows® platform, with 5.3 terabytes of data (Verizon). This recognition of several 1-terabyte and larger databases, provides independent validation that SQL Server meets the demands of enterprise-class scalability. Verizon application This is a Mission critical application that ‘runs the business’ for all of Verizon’s residential telephone customers. It retains a rolling 13 months of billing history and delivers data on demand to customer agents servicing requests in real-time. The total data managed is 15TB (including a 5TB single instance), supporting 18,000 users and achieving close to 5 9’s of availability. Lucent The 3TB system is responsible for managing the schematics of Lucent switches and electronic gears sold to customers. The network schema mapping solution provides critical blueprint information for internal employees and external users. Lucent consolidated databases running on other platforms and are now seeing boosted reliability, high availability, and greater agility on SQL Server. 1+ TB SAP FI/CO AM, HR, HR self-service 400 GB FI, CO,SD,MM, ES-CS, EBP, BW

RESTORE Transaction-log 1. BACKUP Transaction-Log Log Shipping Secondary Server (1..n) Primary Server Monitoring Server 3. RESTORE Transaction-log WITH STANDBY 1. BACKUP Transaction-Log In SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, you can use log shipping to feed transaction logs from one database to another on a constant basis. Continually backing up the transaction logs from a source database and then copying and restoring the logs to a destination database keeps the destination database synchronized with the source database. This allows you to have a backup server and also provides a way to offload query processing from the main computer (the source server) to read-only destination servers. This ability is do to the fact that log shipping can be set up to hydrate the destination server frequently, providing low data latency with little system cost. Log shipping is recommended for use in a variety of scenarios- customers are using it across instances of SQL Server, across geographically distant data centers, for example a bank in southern California is using log shipping between it’s Los Angeles and San Diego data centers as part of their earthquake disaster recovery plan. We think at least some of the growth IDC predicts for Windows Server will come from those UNIX customers moving to Windows. Note: A 4-way machine can run Standard Editions of all three databases today. As Oracle and IBM will charge for 8 cores in the future, they will require Enterprise Edition. We are therefore using all the Enterprise Edition versions for an apple to apple comparison. DB2
