The Perfect tense Give an example of a perfect tense sentence in English: I went to bed / I ate breakfast. In English we use one word – went / ate etc In German they use two words. What are they? Auxiliary and Past participle

Perfect tense with “haben” ich du er/ sie / es wir Ihr Sie / sie habe hast hat haben habt

Perfect tense – haben How do you form the perfect tense? Take the subject (ich, du, er/sie etc) Take the correct form of “haben” (habe, hast, hat, haben, habt, haben) Make a past participle from the main verb: Many past participles have the form ge___t Try: kaufen, hören, tanzen, spielen, machen.

Perfect tense – regular - haben Ich habe gekauft Er hat gemacht Wir haben getanzt Sie hat gespielt I bought He did We danced She played They listened You did your homework We played Tennis Sie haben gehört Du hast deine Hausaufgaben gemacht Wir haben Tennis gespielt.

Perfect tense “haben” Many participles take this form: ge_____en Some of them also change their middle vowel: eg. “trinken” getrunken Try “lesen, essen, treffen, sehen, geben, nehmen” gelesen, gegessen, getroffen, gesehen, gegeben, genommen.

Perfect – haben – practice 2 I met my Friends Ich habe meine Freunde getroffen He drank too much Er hat zuviel getrunken We watched TV Wir haben Ferngesehen They ate Pizza Sie haben Pizza gegessen. You read a book Du hast ein Buch gelesen. You (pl) met my dad. Ihr habt meinen Vater getroffen.

Perfect tense - sein For a few verbs in the perfect tense, you use “ich bin, du bist..” (from the verb sein), instead of “ich habe, du hast..” (from the verb haben) These verbs are usually verbs of motion (except for “bleiben” = to stay)

Sein ich du er/sie/es wir ihr Sie/ sie bin bist ist sind seid

Useful verbs with “sein” To go = gehen gegangen To travel = fahren gefahren To come = kommen gekommen To arrive = ankommen angekommen To stay = bleiben geblieben To depart = abfahren abgefahren To go shopping = einkaufen gehen einkaufen gegangen To go skiing = Ski fahren = Ski gefahren

Perfect tense – sein - Practice I went Ich bin gegangen He went to Germany Er ist nach Deutschland gefahren. We went skiing Wir sind Ski gefahren They went shopping Sie sind einkaufen gegangen The train left at 10.00 Der Zug ist um 10 Uhr abgefahren. I arrived on Tuesday Ich bin am Dienstag angekommen

Perfect tense – Word order I went to London Ich bin nach London gefahren If this comes in the middle of a sentence, then the subject (ich, du..) changes place with the auxiliary verb (bin, bist, habe, hast etc..) On Tuesday I went to London Am Dienstag bin ich nach London gefahren

Word order – Practice 1 Ich bin zu Hause geblieben. (Gestern) Gestern bin ich zu Hause geblieben. Er hat Fussball gespielt. (Am Wochenende) Am Wochenende hat er Fussball gespielt. Wir haben gegessen. (In der Mittagspause) In der Mittagspause haben wir gegessen.

Word order - practice Yesterday he went to London Gestern ist er nach London gefahren. At 10.00 the bus arrived Um 10 Uhr ist der Bus angekommen. On Friday I played rugby / netball Am Freitag habe ich Rugby / Netball gespielt.
