Weihnachten (Christmas) -St. Niklaus -Meals -Krampus -O Tannenbaum -Christmas Decorations -Christmas Sayings -Stille Nacht (Silent Night)

St. Niklaus St. Niklaus is the gift-giver in Germany. He goes around and rewards good children by giving them presents.

Krampus Krampus is a friend of St. Niklaus who chases bad children and punishes them by hitting them with special brooms made of sticks. He also puts bags over their heads. He looks very scary with horns and lots of red fur. Home Home

Weihnachten Decorationen                                       Christmas is celebrated much the same in Germany as it is here. They have Christmas trees that they decorate and lots of candles everywhere.

Advent Decorations They also use a small calendar with gifts inside to count down to Advent. People in Germany decorate wreathes with four candles to celebrate the four days of advent.

Stille Nacht Stille Nacht means Silent Night in German. This song was written by Joseph Mohr. He needed music for the words and Franz Gruber wrote it for him. It was first performed in 1818 in a very small church by the name of St. Nikolaus on Christmas Eve. Now it is still sung there every Christmas Eve at 5 p.m. Home
