German uses 4 other letters as well. You may or may not choose to use them, as there have substitutes for each of them.

Ä ӓ = ay/eh, depending on how you use it. Pretty much the same as German ‘e:’ head/G ӓ ste the dots over the letters are called an “Umlaut.” They indicate a change in the sound of the vowel. If you don’t want to write your words with an Umlaut, simply write an ‘e’ after the letter. Beispiel: G ӓ ste = Gaeste

Ö ö = uh/eu, similar to Blur/hören This sound is closer to French than it is to English

Üü = a vowel sound we don’t have in English! It is closest to a combination of the sounds “ee” and “ew”
