Your next assignment is not a test but rather an essay. In order to help you write this essay, we are going to discuss the parts of an essay in German and give you some helpful writing tips. Our first essay that you will write for a grade in this class will center around the theme of freedom! Your essay should have 3 distinct parts. Einleitung – Introduction Hauptteil – Main body Schluss - Conclusion

The first 10 amendments to the constitution contains the so called bill of rights (Freiheitsurkunde). These amendments protect certain freedoms for all Americans….among them…. Freedom of Religion (die Religionsfreiheit) Freedom of Speech (die Redefreiheit) Freedom of the Press (die Pressefreiheit) Freedom of Assembly (die Versammlungsfreiheit) Freedom of Petition (das Petitionsrecht) Right to Bear Arms (Das Recht Waffen zu besitzen und zu tragen) Right to a Fair Trial (Das Recht auf einen fairen Prozess) Right to own Private Property (Das Recht auf Privat Eigentum) Freedom to Travel (die Reisefreiheit) Freedom to live anywhere in the US (das Recht zu wohnen, wo man will.) Freedom to work at any Job for which you qualify (die Arbeitsfreiheit) Deiner Meinung nach, welche Rechte oder Freiheiten sind am wichtigsten? Warum?

The first part is the “attention-grabber.” You need to interest your reader in your topic so that they will want to continue reading. Consider the following German Questions? (What am I writing about and why is it important?) 2) Welche Freiheiten sind für dich besonders wichtig? (Which freedoms are most important to you? 3) Über welche Freiheiten wirst du nicht schreiben? (About which freedoms are you not going to write?) Consider starting with a quote: Herr Wallace hat einmal gesagt,,,Freiheit war meine erste Liebe”. Or maybe an interesting question? Was versteht man unter dem Wort Freiheit?

In the first paragraph of the main body, you want to establish your points and develop them. Think about what freedoms your going to concentrate on and why! For each of them, give a little explanation of why they are important to you or to anyone for that matter. What do they allow you to do? (verb at the end) Ohne diese Freiheit konnte man nicht…… (verb at the end) (These are just my suggestions, feel free to create your own…..

In the second paragraph, you want to continue to support your points in the first paragraph by saying what would happen if you didn’t have these rights or freedoms. Provide support for the points you made in the first paragraph. Hypothetical statements. (Imagine, how that would have been, if we would not have had this freedom.) (We would have…….not had / not done / not been able to do) Es gibt viele gute Gründe, warum wir diese Freiheit haben. Erstens….. Zweitens…..Drittens…. (There are many good reasons, why we have this freedom. First… Second…. Thirdly..) (These are only some of the reasons, why I find these Freedoms important.)

In the closing of your essay, you want to summarize the main points of your previous paragraphs and draw conclusions (general or specific) about the topic of the paper. (verb on the end) Es steht fest, dass…. (verb on the end) Das ist nich nur wichtig für….., sondern für…. Deswegen sage ich, dass…. (verb on the end) Zum Schluss möchte ich nur sagen,……
