Conjunctions Linking up your clauses and expanding your ideas using correct word order!

Co-ordinating Conjunctions undand aberbut oderor sondern(not this) but (that) dennfor/as/because These words join up clauses without any change to the word order

Co-ordinating continued 1.Ich treffe mich oft mit Freunden und wir fahren zusammen in die Stadt. 2.Ich verstehe mich gut mit Lisa aber sie ärgert mich auch manchmal!

Words to watch! Some words look like they may be conjunctions but are in fact adverbs. e.g. jedoch - however deshalb- therefore / that’s why leider- unfortunately also- so außerdem- apart from that/moreover These behave like any expression of time. a.Gestern Abend war Lisa sehr müde, deshalb ist sie früh ins Bett gegangen. b.Jedoch hat sie ein bisschen gelesen. c.Leider kann sie heute nicht ausgehen, also gehe ich allein ins Kino.

Sub-ordinating conjunctions For a full list, look in your grammar booklets, page 26 Common ones: weil, dass, wenn, obwohl, damit, wann, wo, wie, warum, welche, da, damit These conjunctions send the main verb in the clause to the end of the clause

Sub-ordinating conjunctions cont.. e.g. Ich lese viel, so dass ich mich nicht langweile. Es ärgert mich, wenn wir uns streiten. Obwohl wir uns streiten, sind wir beste Freunde! When you start the whole sentence with a sub- ordinating conjunction you get VERB, VERB pattern in the middle of the sentence. THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Complete these sentences using sub-ordinating conjunctions Try and use the verbs we’re practising: sich fühlen - to feel sich verstehen – to get on with s.o. sich wohlfühlen – to feel happy sich streiten – to argue sich treffen – to meet sich anstrengen – to make an effort sich ärgern – to get annoyed sich langweilen – to get bored 1.
