EGO | EUROPÄISCHE GESCHICHTE ONLINE EUROPEAN HISTORY ONLINE A TRANSCULTURAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE First of all: I would like to thank you for the opportunity to present the “Europäische Geschichte Online”, in short EGO. So, what is EGO? In one sentence: European History Online is a reviewed transcultural history of Europe on the internet encompassing the period from approx. 1450 to 1950.

transcultural / transnational perspectives on European history | Innovation transcultural / transnational perspectives on European history international and interdisciplinary collaboration media change: multimedia In our opinion EGO’s innovative potential lies in three aspects: a. in its transcultural / transnational perspective on European history b. in the „Europeanization“ of research on European history c. in the employment multimedia elements

| Transcultural / transnational perspectives on Europe processes of communication, intercultural encounter and interaction, circulation, distribution, diffusion, entanglements, transfer and exchange “tidal Europe“ (Davies 1996: 9) EGO endorses a transcultural/transnational perspective on European history. It is interested in „links and flows“ ((Iriye/Saunier 2009: xviii): the circulations and connections between, above and beyond national, regional and cultural spheres. EGO wants to track flows of people, goods, ideas, products or patterns that stretched over borders. It analyzes the different grades of interaction and entanglement and thus documents the shape, content, role and impact of transcultural processes. In doing so, EGO particularly focuses on intercultural transfer. EGO conceives of Europe as a zone of communication that never had stable borders. This approach allows for a multidisciplinary perspective on an dynamic, ever-changing “tidal Europe” (Davies 1996: 9).

“Europeanization“ of research on European history | Research network “Europeanization“ of research on European history interlinking international scholars working in the various disciplines of European history international and interdisciplinary editorial board A transcultural history of Europe, we felt, ought to be compiled in transnational and interdisciplinary collaboration that allows for a multidisciplinary perspective on European history. Core of this research network - that already consists of more than 100 contributors from all over Europe - is the international and interdisciplinary editorial board with 24 distinguished scholars from 9 European countries and the United States representing more than 20 disciplines and sub-disciplines. The editorial board members both invite authors and review entries in their respective field of research. Publication languages are German and English.

composed of multimedia items “living document“ |Media change composed of multimedia items “living document“ “European History Online” does not pretend to offer a complete, definite or even canonical list of entries. But with the end of the project phase in 2013 it will supply a coherent sample of articles. Instead of a rigid delimitation, the possibility, even more: the necessity of revision, updating and addition was considered right from the outset by choosing the form of an online publication. EGO has a modular structure. It will grow organically around the laid-out framework represented by the ten threads. It will be regularly updated and purposefully enlarged even after the end of the project phase in 2013. Thus, in form, content and concept EGO is a “living document”.

EGO does not only provide reviewed articles but also pictures, maps, charts, …

...source editions ...

... or audio- and videofiles.

Via reference and citation links EGO also integrates evaluated external scholarly resources as can be seen here

project phase July 2009 – June 2013 |Schedule project phase July 2009 – June 2013 public launch of the website is scheduled for 2010 The actual project phase of EGO starts next week, on July, 1. The public launch of EGO is scheduled for 2010.

Models and Stereotypes European Networks European Media Controversies Background Crossroads Models and Stereotypes European Networks European Media Europe on the Road Europe and the World Transnational Movements & Organizations Alliances and Wars To trace and document all “links and flows” in European History that principally embrace all aspects of human life, thought and relations for a time period of more than 500 years calls for some kind of focusing. Therefore, EGO focuses on phenomena of concentrated communication that allows for - both with regard to content and methods- the analysis of principal interaction processes in European history. These approaches to a transcultural history of Modern Europe are represented by the so-called “threads” that can be viewed here.
