gefallen I like this shirt. Das Hemd gefällt mir. „Gefallen“ literally means to be pleasing (to). So the subject of the sentence in German would be the object (i.e. the thing that is liked) in an English sentence. Compare these sentences: I like this shirt. Das Hemd gefällt mir. He likes the shoes. Die Schuhe gefallen ihm. Note the dative case pronouns: mir uns dir euch ihm ihnen ihr Ihnen
Stem-changing verbs 1. a to ä This set includes einladen(separable, ä), fahren, gefallen, schlafen, halten, laufen(ä), tragen, waschen. 2. e to ie This set includes empfehlen, lesen, sehen 3. e to i This set includes essen, geben, helfen, nehmen(nimmt), sprechen, treffen
Separable prefix verbs Separable prefix verbs consist of a prefix (almost always a preposition) and a verb. The addition of a prefix often adds to the meaning of the main verb, but some change the meaning completely, as in laden (to load) vs. einladen (to invite). With separable prefix verbs, one must conjugate the verb and place it in second position; the prefix then appears at the end. If there is any reason to put the verb at the end of the phrase or clause, the prefix is on the front of the verb. BEISPIEL: anprobieren to try on: Ich probiere die Schuhe an. But: Ich will die Schuhe anprobieren. aufräumen to clean up: Ich räume mein Zimmer auf. But: Ich muss mein Zimmer aufräumen.
