Das Perfekt Present Perfect Tense. By Sarah & Rose

Basic Rules You need to use either haben or sein these are Auxiliary verbs or helping verbs. You have to add a ge_(stem)_t to the stem of the verb.

Weak or Regular Verbs Always use haben. The past participle is always formed by dropping the en from the verb and adding ge____t. Eg. Spielen -> Spiel -> Gespielt (Verb) (Stem) (Past Participle) - Machen -> Mach -> Gemacht Note: Besuchen -> Besuch -> Besucht Be, ver or er dont have ge at the beginning of the past participle.

Strong or Irregular Verbs Part 1 The first question to ask yourself, is there movement or a change of state? If not, use haben plus the past participle listed in your dictionary. Eg. Ich habe gestern gegessen. (Essen) -Ich habe Hamburger gegessen. (Essen)

Strong or Irregular Verbs Part 2 If there is movement or a change of state/condition, use sein and the past participle. Eg. Ich habe kaufen gegessen. - Ich habe kuchen gemacht. - Wir haben splitter gebraten. Note: Ich bin nach Perth gereist. (Reisen- to travel, uses sein because there is movement.
