German “ wo - compounds ” Provided by deutschdrang. com for individual and classroom use only. May not be reproduced for any other purposes.

German wo - compounds combine the word “ wo ” with a preposition, usually at the start of a question. They have nothing to do with the word “ wo ” meaning “ where ”. Instead, they are used to replace the combination of a preposition + what ( with what ? for what ? about what ? etc.). Note that the preposition in English may come at the end of the question. Examples : With what did you clean the window ? ( What did you clean the window with ?) - Womit hast du das Fenster geputzt ? What did they speak of ? – Wovon haben sie gesprochen ? What is she paying for ? – Wofür bezahlt sie ?

wo - compounds can be made from most prepositions. Notable exceptions are : außer, bis, gegenüber, ohne, seit & all genitive prepositions. Some wo - compounds are not commonly used even though they are possible ( wohinter, woneben, wozwischen ). With prepositions that start with a vowel, an extra “ r ” is inserted to make pronunciation easier ( e. g. worauf, worin, worüber ). It is important to remember that wo - compounds only work for questions that ask for what ? ( things ). They cannot be used if a question asks for who ?/ whom ? ( people ). wo - compounds are particularly common with prepositions that are used idiomatically with certain verbs ( e. g. Ich glaube an Recycling und Umweltschutz. Woran glaubst du ?).

Practice – üben wir ! Ask the appropriate question with a wo - compound. Beispiel : Ich bitte ihn um Geld. Worum bittest du ihn ? 1. Ich freue mich über das schöne Wetter. ______________ freust du dich ? 2. Ich bin gerade beim Fernsehen. _______________ bist du gerade ? 3. Ich lege mein Buch auf den Tisch. _______________ legst du dein Buch ? 4. Ich interessiere mich für Geschichte. _______________ interessierst du dich ? Worüber Wobei Worauf Wofür

Ich warte auf den nächsten Bus. _____________________ wartest du ? 8. Ich bringe meine Kleider in einem Koffer. _____________________ bringst du deine Kleider ? 9. Ich demonstriere gegen Atomkraft. _____________________ demonstrierst du ? 10. Ich verstehe nicht viel von Computern. _____________________ verstehst du nicht viel ? Woran Wovor Worauf Worin Wogegen Wovon

11. Ich verstecke mich unter der Decke. _____________________ versteckst du dich ? 12. Ich schreibe mit einem Kuli. _____________________ schreibst du ? 13.
