1 DER FRÜHLING Der Frühling beginnt am 21. März, aber in Nova Scotia ist es im März oft noch kalt, und das Wetter ist meist nicht schön. Erst im Mai wird es wärmer. Der Frühling ist hier kurz. Im April schreiben die Studenten Examen, und dann enden die Universitätskurse. Viele Studenten fahren nach Hause.

2 Adjektive + Komparativ
Adjectives indicate characteristics or qualities. The basic form of the adjective is called “positive” : (My Grandfather is old) Mein Bruder ist klein. Der Mann ist groß. Der Film ist lang

3 Adjektive + Komparativ
To indicate that a person or object has more of a certain quality than another, the comparative form of the adjective is used: (My Grandfather is older than my Grandmother) Mein Bruder ist kleiner als ich. Der Mann ist größer als mein Vater Der Film ist länger als zwei Stunden

The comparative in German is always formed by adding -er to the adjective even long ones like “intelligent” : Mein Hund ist intelligenter als meine Katze.

7 Adjektive + Komparativ
To compare things of different value the adjective in the comparative form is followed by the word “als” . It has the same function as the English “than” after a comparative. Mein Bruder ist kleiner als ich. Der Mann ist größer als mein Vater Der Film ist länger als zwei Stunden

8 Adjektive + Komparativ
To compare two things of equal value you use the adjective in the positive form preceeded by the word “so” and followed by the word “wie”. They fulfill the same function as the English “as ... as”. Meine Schwester ist so groß wie mein Bruder. Mein Onkel ist so alt wie meine Mutter.

Meine andere Tante, Tante Claudia, ist so alt wie Helga. Claudia ist die Schwester von meiner Mutter. Meine Mutter ist zwei Jahre älter als mein Vater, aber zwei Jahre jünger als Tante Claudia. Mein Cousin Ralf, der Sohn von Kurt und Helga, ist 13. Er ist drei Jahre jünger als meine Schwester Johanna, aber ich bin zwei Jahre älter als er. Mutters Nichte, Tante Claudias Tochter Nicole, ist so alt wie ich.
