39 Windows Essential Server Solutions Family Myths
These myths apply to both Windows SBS 2008 and Windows EBS 2008 The Windows Essential Server Solutions family of software contains scaled down or limited versions of software Both Windows SBS and Windows EBS contain full versions of the latest technologies Enterprise class software at a very affordable SMB price Not limited, disabled or “lite” versions I will outgrow these products There is a clear transition plan for Windows SBS 2008 customers which grow beyond 75 users There is also a clear transition plan for Windows EBS 2008 customers which grow beyond 300 users Solutions Pathway Website created to help with scenarios (next slide)

40 Windows Essential Server Solutions Family Myths
These myths apply to both Windows SBS 2008 and Windows EBS 2008 Difficult to transition to Windows EBS or a la carte products Solution Pathway is the Internet site that covers all the customer mobility scenarios to move in, within or outside the family ( Migration guidance to Windows SBS 2008: Migration guidance from Windows SBS to Windows EBS: This diagram from the Solutions Pathway Website shows the many ways to migrate inside or outside the Windows Essential Server Solutions family to meet the customer business needs.

41 Top Myths for Windows SBS 2008

42 The “Cannot add servers or DCs to an SBS Domain” Myth
I cannot add additional servers to a Windows SBS domain You certainly can add servers Can only be one server in the domain running Windows SBS Must be the root of the AD forest All flexible master operations (FSMO) restricted to the Windows SBS server Can be multiple domain controllers, as many as required Cannot create trust relationships Cannot have any child domains Premium version comes with a second copy of Windows Server 2008 Additional servers in remote offices are helpful For domain controller redundancy For faster authentication and resource location As a global catalog server

43 The “I can’t deploy Terminal Server” Myth
I cannot run Terminal Services in the Windows SBS domain You absolutely can run Terminal Services With Premium Edition, you can run TS in Application mode on the second server Or you can add additional Windows Servers on the Windows SBS network to run TS, including TS load balancing Need to purchase TS CALs separately for either scenario Remote Web Workplace now allows you to Cannot run the first server running Windows SBS with TS in Application mode There are potential security risks Great new features in the current version of Terminal Services Application publishing USB support Printer management

44 Two Hardware Myths (one may be true)
Windows SBS 2008 requires different hardware than Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Does require 64-bit hardware because of Exchange Server 2007 Built on Windows Server 2008 so same hardware works System requirements clearly identified at Approved hardware can be found in the Windows Server Catalog at I cannot upgrade my current server (hardware) May be true depending on server in place 64-bit hardware is required More powerful technologies included so consider multi-core, multi-processor and plenty of memory and disk space

45 The “Exchange Mailbox is too Limited” Myth
Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 mail store limit is too small No limit on the size of the database Supports 5 storage groups Supports 5 databases Great new features in Exchange Server 2007 Includes Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) Enhanced Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access (OWA) Advanced mobile policy enforcement Foundation for Unified Communications

46 The “Line of Business Support is Limited” Myth
My applications are not supported on Windows SBS 2008 More third party support than ever before No real difference between Windows Server 2008 and Windows SBS 2008 given the new architecture of this version Premium is completely industry standard (so there should be no objections) Second license of Windows Server 2008 Standard included with Windows SBS Premium Also shipping both 32-bit or 64-bit offered SQL Server 2008 Standard for Small Business Also shipping SQL Server 2005 Standard (for one year after Release to Manufacturing) Partner support deep and widely available

47 The “I Cannot Use Standard Server Tools” Myth
I cannot use the tools from Windows Server 2008 Windows SBS includes wizards to simplify management tasks & help ensure a best practice deployment Wizards designed to reduce management overhead and reduce time needed to maintain and support Windows SBS Built on Windows Server 2008 so all standard management tools can be used based on your preference

48 The “Windows SBS is not Secure” Myth
Preconfigured to best practices for security and safety of business and user information Security happens as three levels On the network Monitoring of Anti-virus and spyware network wide View of the health and security of the entire network On the server Folder redirection Backup Tools Server Protection with One Care for Server (120 day trial) On the desktop Windows Software Update Services Spam and Malware protection

49 The “Windows SBS cannot be Virtualized” Myth
I cannot use virtualization with Windows SBS Virtualization is supported For Windows SBS 2008 Standard – you may run one instance of the server software on a physical or virtual machine, but not both For Windows SBS 2008 Premium - you can choose to run the “premium server” software on a second server, and leverage virtualization following the licensing details Whitepapers being developed to provide guidance and supported scenarios for Windows SBS in virtualized environment Available online soon Licensing rights for the second Windows Server in Premium You are granted a 1+1 license similar to a stand-alone Windows Server Standard license

50 The “Premium SKU Costs Way Too Much” Myth
I can’t afford to buy the premium version of Windows SBS Windows SBS 2008 Premium is going up in price due to: Additional copy of Windows Server 2008 is now included SQL Server 2008 Standard for Small Business SBS 2003 included Workgroup Edition rather than Standard Edition Flexible approach with CALS help bring significant cost savings Only purchase Premium CALs for users that need access to SQL (you can mix Standard & Premium CALs on the same Windows SBS server) Reduced CAL cost keeps Windows SBS affordable as customers scale CALs apply to any other copies of Windows Server, SQL Server, or Exchange Server on the network, eliminating the need to purchase additional CALs (Server license will be required) Premium Edition also provides flexibility SQL Server 2008 can actually be installed on the first Windows SBS server, leaving the second Windows Server available for any use desired 2nd server can be used to enable Terminal Services in App Server mode to provide access to applications (TS CALs required) Bottom line - Windows SBS Premium provides significant cost savings compared to buying Windows SBS Standard and adding a second Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 license

51 The “One Server” Myth Windows SBS 2008 is a ONE server approach
Premium comes with a second instance of Windows Server 2008 Standard to be run on a separate server Second server a perfect fit for: LOB applications TS in Application mode Secondary Domain Controller Other server roles Can add as many additional Windows Servers as you wish Including Branch office scenarios which may often want a read only domain controller (RODC) for local authentication

52 The “Windows SBS is Too Complex” Myth
Windows SBS 2008 is complex to install Deployment, setup and administration made easy More wizards Setup only answering business-related questions Simple language to explain each step More customization via post-setup configuration Answer file creates consistency in deployment which makes standardization possible Simplifies supporting multiple implementations Can run in unattended mode making it more efficient to deploy Very powerful for partners offering managed services Streamlined Administration Console Remotely accessible reports Monitoring across servers and client PC’s Customizable

53 The “Cannot Deploy ISA” Myth
Now that ISA Server has been removed from Windows SBS 2008, ISA Server is not supported on a Windows SBS network ISA Server was removed from Windows SBS 2008 due to low adoption/high cost reasons It can absolutely be deployed if required on a Windows SBS 2008 domain ISA Server 2006 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 so you would need to install it on a Windows Server 2003 R2 as part of the SBS domain Once Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG), next-gen ISA Server is available, deploying it on a Windows SBS 2008 domain will also be supported In fact, customers with Windows SBS 2003 R2 and current Software Assurance will be fulfilled a copy of ISA Server 2006 along with a copy of Windows Server 2003 R2 initially. Once Forefront TMG is released, they will also receive be granted a license for it.

54 The “I am Losing Value in my Software Assurance” Myth
The Software Assurance investment I made prior is going out the window Your investment will be protected Chart shows how that will happen

55 Top Myths for Windows EBS 2008

56 The “Looks Like a Return to BackOffice” Myth
This sure looks like a blast from the past – BackOffice Server Windows EBS is a product specifically designed for the mid market customer Best-in-class products brought together in a simplified and strategic product leveraging industry best practices Many wizards put into the product to make it simple and efficient to administrate and manage Includes core functionality needed to meet infrastructure needs of mid market companies to help you drive success Platform operating system Messaging Collaboration Security Edge Security Anti-virus and Malware Centralized management and monitoring Database (Premium)

57 The “You Can’t Deploy Unified Communications & Messaging” Myth
You cannot deploy unified messaging with Windows EBS Exchange Server 2007 Standard is included in Windows EBS Can implement same unified messaging functionality you would with Exchange Server 2007 Standard Enterprise CALs required for some features to be enabled Can implement Exchange Server 2007 Enterprise on another server in the domain to gain the full unified messaging and unified communication feature set Office Communicator can be deployed in either environment

58 The “Limited Management Capabilities” Myth
You cannot manage more than 14 servers Boiling it down – you can manage up to 30 servers with appropriate licensing (a limited number are included with EBS depending on version) Here are the fine print details: Windows Essential Business Server supports up to 30 System Center Essentials 2007 (SCE) Server Management Licenses (SMLs) 12 SCE SMLs are included with Windows EBS Standard 15 SCE SMLs are included with Windows EBS Premium A SCE SML is not required for the operating system environment hosting SCE. The Systems Center Essentials 2007 component of the Windows EBS 2008 solution has two categories of management licenses: server and client. For the server management, the Windows EBS 2008 CAL does not cover the management licensing requirement, but SCE SMLs are included per above For the client management, the Windows EBS 2008 CAL does cover the management licensing requirement.

59 The “Big Bang Deployment” Myth
Windows EBS has to be deployed all at once – “big bang” approach Not the right answer – deployment can be spread over a period of time Customers will be required to implement all 3 or 4 boxes together within the deployment window They can repurpose existing hardware to be one or more of the servers in Windows Essential Business Server The ability to buy and implement these servers together provides midsized business more predictability with IT budgeting, including support and replacement

60 The “Looks Like Just a Suite” Myth
Windows EBS is just a packaging of Windows Server Exchange Server, etc. Not just a marketing SKU, it’s an integrated solution Built from the ground up, significant customer and partner research, engineering and know-how went into the design and construction of Windows EBS Leveraged learning and technology from Windows SBS and other product groups Designed specifically for midsized companies

61 The “EBS is too Complex” Myth
Windows EBS is as complex as the individual components deployed separately Windows EBS is the result of amazing engineering integration Has an efficient deployment methodology that integrates all components into a logical installation path Predictable platform with less complexity Provides control to customize the solution to unique business needs Leverages wizards and predefined actions to simplify implementation and management

62 The “Lack of a Firewall” Myth
Windows EBS does not have a firewall Includes Forefront Threat Management Gateway which provides an integrated setup and user interface for ease of management and configuration Offers updated reporting, monitoring, and logging. Forefront Threat Management Gateway is the future version of the Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration Server (ISA Server) and will extend the capabilities of ISA Server with new features and security technologies.
