3 Infinitives What is an infinitive? Definition  An infinitive is the base form of a verb; unconjugated form of the verb All German verbs end with “-en”  heißen, kommen, sprechen, lesen, arbeiten, etc. ***Sein is irregular! It ends with “-n”, but not “-en”

4 In English… We drop the “to” from the infinitives, and sometimes we add certain endings: –E–Ex. To play  John plays. We play To cook  I cook. He cooks. (drop the to, but add no endings) To be  I am. You are. He is. (note how irregular the verb is)

5 Regular Verbs Follow a similar pattern **Take infinitive, remove the “-en”, and add the following endings: –i–ich ____ewir ____en –d–du ____stihr ____t –e–er_____tsie_____en –s–sie ____tSie ____en –e–es _____t

6 Zum Beispiel! Take the verb “spielen” – to play –Ich spielewir spielen –Du spielstihr spielt –Er/sie/es spieltsie/Sie spielen “hören” – to hear/listen –Ich hörewir hören –Du hörstihr hört –Er/sie/es hörtsie/Sie hören

7 Examples! Ich spiele Basketball. Du hörst Musik. Johann hört Musik, aber Margit spielt Hockey. Johann und Margit spielen Gitarre. Johann und ich spielen Gitarre.

8 Slightly irregular, but still normal Some verbs are regular, but they vary slightly from the rule due to pronunciation or spelling reasons:  heißen, arbeiten, tanzen

9 heißen To be called –i–ich heißewir heißen –d–du heißt (notice, not heißst)ihr heißt –e–er/sie/es heißt sie/Sie heißen

10 tanzen To dance –i–ich tanzewir tanzen –d–du tanzt (not tanzst)ihr tanzt –e–er/sie/es tanztsie/Sie tanzen

11 arbeiten Verbs like “arbeiten” whose stem ends in “t”—must add an extra “e” to make the pronunciation easier. You will learn more of these as we move along. Also verbs that end in “n” or “d” –i–ich arbeitewir arbeiten –d–du arbeitestihr arbeitet –e–er/sie/es arbeitetsie/Sie arbeiten
