Coordinating Conjunctions Why we need them & how to use them deutschdrang.com

Eine Frau wartet auf den Bus.Der Bus hat Verspätung. These are two simple separate statements. Each is a complete sentence with a subject and a conjugated verb that is the second element in the sentence.

If we want to make more complex sentences, we can connect two or more simple sentences into one complex sentence. Each of the elements in the complex sentence is a clause. You can think of a clause as a puzzle piece that you are trying to connect to another puzzle piece. eine Frau wartet auf den Busder Bus hat Verspätung Piece 1 Piece 2

In order to connect the puzzle pieces, we must use a connector, which, in grammar terms, is called a conjunction. A coordinating conjunction connects two puzzle pieces (clauses) that could actually stand on their own. Piece 1 Piece 2 conjunction eine Frau wartet auf den Bus der Bus hat Verspätung aber

Once the conjunction is inserted, you now have a complete sentence again that consists of 2 clauses connected by a conjunction. Eine Frau wartet auf den Bus, aber der Bus hat Verspätung. Nothing has changed about the word order in either of the clauses. The conjugated verb is still the second element in each clause. That tells you that the conjunction “aber” is a coordinating conjunction. The clauses on either side of it are equal. One does not depend on the other. That’s why these clauses are often called independent clauses or main clauses.

There are 5 major coordinating conjunctions in German. aber = but denn = for (in the sense of “because.” E.g. You must marry me. For I love you!) oder = or sondern = but rather (contradicts a negative first statement. E.g. Das ist kein Hund, sondern eine Katze.) und = and

Create complete sentences by sorting the sentence elements into a correct second clause. Remember to put the conjugated verb in second position!
