Clauses that include a subordinating conjunction cannot stand alone as a complete sentence
...because he is thirsty. He is drinking beer because he is thirsty

Also, using subordinating conjuntions affects word order: the conjugated verb in the subordinate clause moves to the end of it. Also, the subject always follows the conjunction. Er trinkt Bier. Er ist durstig Er trinkt Bier, weil er durstig ist. Sie hat heute Geburtstag Sie sagt, dass sie heute Geburtstag hat.

Question words can also function as subordinating conjunctions.
Wer, was, wie, warum, wann, ob, ...

Schmeckt das Bier? Er fragt, ob das Bier schmeckt. Wo ist das Bier? Er fragt, wo das Bier ist. Was ist das? Er fragt, was das ist.
