Nicht oder Kein?

2 Some simple rules: Kein (not a, not any, no) is the negative of ein.
It negates nouns preceded by ein or nouns not preceded by any article.

3 Hat er eine Freundin?

4 Nein, er hat keine Freundin!

5 Kein is an ein-word and takes the same endings as ein and the possessive adjectives.

6 Haben Sie Freunde in Florida?

7 Nein, ich habe keine Freunde in Florida! Aber…
Kein negates a noun without an article.

8 Ich habe Freunde auf Hawaii!

9 Ist das der Professor?

10 Nein, das ist nicht der Professor.
Nicht (not) The noun is preceded by a def. article – so it can’t take kein. Nicht also comes before a predicate nominative.
