Separable Verbs

Turn to page R22 in your German One Book R22 is in the back of the book There are examples at the top of the page.

There is a group of verbs in German called separable verbs = trennbare Verben

They consist of a prefix and the main verb abwaschen

This is how they appear in the infinitive: As one word! abwaschen

When you use a separable verb in the present tense you need to chop it up! abwaschen Ich wasche ab.

The prefix is always at the end of the clause! Ich wasche heute den ganzen Tag alle Gabeln, Löffel, Messer, Gläser, Teller und Schälchen zusammen mit meiner Großmutter und meinen Geschwistern ab.

Some prefixes that separate: auf – off, at an – on, at ab – from, off mit – with zu - to ein – on, one aus – out, off bei – with, by These prefixes can also be used alone as prepositions or adverbs!

Some prefixes that DO NOT separate ver – (takes the verb to the extreme, exaggerates it, or can make it opposite) ent – ( makes the verb the opposite or a verb of removal)

Put these separable verbs into a present tense form! 1.abwaschen: Ich _______ ____. 2.aufräumen: Du _________ ____. 3.anziehen: Er _______ sich ____. 4.fernsehen: Wir _______ ____. 5.einkaufen: Ihr ________ ____. 6.aufstehen: Sie _______ ____.

If the separable verb is one of two verbs in a sentence, then it goes to the end, and stays together. Example: Ich muss einkaufen. I must shop. Notice that the separable verb goes to the end and stays with the en ending.

Used with a modal verb (helping verb) we have to use the infinitive of the separable verb: Ich muss immer abwaschen!

The next slides are for German III and IV.

In the perfect tense… … the past participle is made up by sticking the prefix in front of the past participle of the actual verb. ab + gewaschen = abgewaschen

Meine Mutter hat abgewaschen

Perfect Tense: Make up a sentence each for these three verbs: einkaufen: Er _______ ___________________ aufräumen: Wir________ __________________ abwaschen: Du ________ ___________________

Write these sentences again using the modal verb in brackets! 1.Ich stehe um acht Uhr auf. (müssen) 2.Du wäschst heute ab. (müssen) 3.Er räumt immer sein Zimmer auf. (müssen) 4.Wie ziehen uns um halb acht an. (müssen) 5.Er sieht immer fern. (dürfen) 6.Ihr kauft ein. (dürfen)
