4 Deutsch 2 Deutsch macht Spaß! :)
Reflexiv Verben Deutsch 2 Deutsch macht Spaß! :)

5 German has some verbs that require a reflexive pronoun to complete a sentence
Reflexive shows that the pronoun refers back to the subject of the sentence Ich wasche das Auto. I’m washing the car. Ich wasche mich. I’m washing myself.

6 Some verbs will be reflexive, even if they aren’t in English
Ich ziehe mich an. I’m getting dressed. Ich schminke mich. I’m putting on makeup. Ich rasiere mich. I’m shaving. Ich entspanne mich. I’m relaxing.

7 Sich is similar to English “oneself”
Reflexive verbs are typically identified by the reflexive pronoun sich, which precedes the infinitive form (exactly like your vocab. lists! :P) Sich is similar to English “oneself” Sich waschen = to wash oneself

8 List of reflexive verbs
Sich ansehen Sich beeilen Sich duschen Sich freuen auf Sich kämmen Sich putzen Sich raiseren Sich setzen Sich treffen Sich vorbereiten Sich waschen

9 Some German verbs are ALWAYS used with a reflexive pronoun and are called “reflexive verbs”
This is different than English Sich freuen auf- Ich freue mich auf die Reise Sich beeilen- Wir müssen uns beeilen

10 The reflexive pronoun refers to a person who is the subject AND the object of the sentence
When reflexive pronoun is used as a direct object, it appears in the accusative case

11 Many take the accusative reflexive pronouns- they function as direct objects.
What am I washing? Myself! Ich wasche mich. Verb reflects directly back to the subject

12 Reflexive Pronouns pg. 35-36
Subject Accusative Reflexive Pronoun ich mich Du dich er sich sie es wir uns ihr euch Sie

13 Dative case… Reflexive pronouns appear in the dative case when they function as an indirect object. Dative reflexive pronoun refers to the subject AND the indirect object Sich kämmen- Ich kämme mir die Haare. Sich putzen- Ich putze mir die Zähne.

14 Dative Reflexive Pronoun
Function as indirect objects Some other element in the sentence that is the direct object (typically body part or piece of clothing that belongs to the subject) Ich putze mir die Zähne.

15 Ich ziehe mich an. Ich ziehe mir einen Mantel an. Ich wasche mich. Ich wasche mir die Hände. Rasierst du dich? Rasierst du dir die Beine?

16 Reflexive Pronouns… (noch einmal!)
Subject Acc. Refl. Pronoun Dative Refl. Pronoun ich mich mir du dich dir er sich sie es wir uns ihr euch Sie

17 Wichtig! Body parts DO NOT take a possessive adjective! In German, when a reflexive pronoun is used it already indicates to whom the body parts belong! This is wrong AND redundant This is unlike English- I wash MY hands Ich wasche mir die Hände.

18 Word Order The reflexive pronoun should occur DIRECTLY AFTER the conjugated VERB! (as close to the subject as possible!) Ich wasche mir jeden Tag die Haare. Jeden Tag wasche ich mir die Haare.

19 Ein paar Beispiele… I’m washing myself. I’m washing my hands.
Ich __________ _________. I’m washing my hands. Ich __________ _________ ___________. I’m showering. wasche mich wasche mir Die Hände dusche mich

20 Are you shaving your legs?
_____________ du _____________? Are you shaving your legs? ________________ du ____________ die Beine? Rasierst dich Rasierst dir

21 Beispiele… I relax every day. (sich entspannen)
________________________________ The German language interests me. (sich interessieren) Ich bin spät! I’m hurrying! (sich beeilen) Ich entspanne mich jeden Tag. Die deutsche Sprache interessiert mich. Ich bin spät! Ich beeile mich!

22 She’s setting herself down on a chair. (sich setzen)
_________________________________ I’m combing my hair. ________________________________ Sie setzt sich auf den Stuhl. Ich kämme mir die Haare.
