2 Aims to learn the alphabet in German
to spell in German and ask how something is spelt. to be able to say the months of the year to be able to say when your birthday is.

3 Auf Deutsch ist das Alphabet anders als auf English
It’s worth making this point with primary classes as they might not realise that alphabets are different in all languages and are part of helping us know how to pronounce the words.

Findet die Sounds… ...die mit den Buchstaben… …übereinstimmen. Zum Beispiel… a = ah For this activity you can put the French letter sounds on posters around the room. You can add extra levels of support by displaying the sound in pairs (e.g. Ah Bay together, letting the pupils work in pairs or you can stick the letters to objects which start with that letter in English (e.g day on a desk) to give them clues. It’s a good idea to get them to practise what letters will sound like as they go round as well. The letters are available in the support resources on the site.

Setzt euch in einer Gruppe. Hand out letters to all the pupils and get them to find the other letters in their letter groups (as in the slide). They can find each other by going around the class saying their letter. Erfindet ein Sound für eure Gruppe.

Wenn es 100% richtig ist... . . . macht euren Sound! Once they are sure they are able to do it as a group, they have to say their chant and do it in front of the class. If they get it all right, they get a point. You can follow this up with doing it against the clock and moving the cards around the table or shuffling them.

You can use this to ask pupils to come out and find the place on the map. You can get them to also say where it is. E.g. Dans le nord etc.

In einer Gruppe: Person 1, Person 2 und Person 3 Im Uhrzeigersinn 1, 2, 3 In groups number the pupils 1 - 4 E.g.

19 Der Lehrer sagt eine Zahl, zum Beispiel ‘Nummer 1’
Die Personen ‘1’ kommen zu ihm. Jede ‘Person 1’ schreibt ein Wort ab. Er/Sie geht zurück zur Gruppe. The idea here is that pupils come out one at a time and copy a word which they then have to spell to their group, using support if necessary. You could get them to do this in pairs if you thought it will be too challenging. Er/Sie buchstabiert das Wort.

23 To form the date correctly:
4th-19th of the month: Use the number + ten eg. Ich habe am vierten Juni Geburtstag My birthday is on the 4th June 20th-31st of the month: Use the number + sten eg. Ich habe am zwanzigsten Juni Geburtstag My birthday is on the 20th June Die Ausnahmen! ‘am siebten’ = on the 7th ‘am achten’ = on the 8th
