CARDINAL FRANCIS XAVIER Nguyễn Văn Thuận Foundation September, 2016 Dear friends in Christ, I still cherish vivid memories of my first encounter, some 60 years ago, with Francis Xavier Nguyen van Thuan, then a young chaplain from Hue, Vietnam. His amiable, unassuming manner, and his deep piety were evident to us all the very first day we hosted him in our home, and we immediately recognized in him a priest after the heart of God. His subsequent visits to the Mother House, first as Vicar-General, then as Bishop, proved to be a constant source of warmth, cordiality and joy, which he so graciously embodied. The Sisters listened to each and every word he had for us, words filled with religious wisdom, the importance of which they fully appreciated. During his long years in prison, we shared, along with his relatives, a deep concern for his life, and only occasionally did we receive a short message that would revive our hopes. Upon his release and ensuing exile from Vietnam, his close proximity in Rome proved providential: it secured for us sisters much easier ways to communicate. His regular stays with us at Cellitinnen Kloster were heartfelt encounters that will remain with us, unforgotten well beyond his death. On this 14th anniversary of his passing, let us stay united in prayers asking God to bless the Cause of Beatification, to grant peace to Vietnam and the world. CARDINAL FRANCIS XAVIER Nguyễn Văn Thuận Foundation Liebe Freunde in Christus Nach fast 60 Jahren, die vergangen sind, seit der ersten Begegnung mit dem damals jungen Kaplan Franziskus Xaver Nguyen van Thuân aus Hue, Vietnam ist er mir noch immer in sehr guter, lebhafter Erinnerung geblieben. Seine liebenswürdige, bescheidene Art, seine echte, tiefe Frömmigkeit machten vom ersten Tag seines Aufenthalts auf mich und uns den Eindruck, einen Priester nach dem Herzen Gottes in unserem Haus zu beherbergen. Auch seine weiteren Besuche, die er zunächst als Generalvikar, dann als Bischof bei uns im Mutterhaus machte, waren immer geprägt durch seine ganz natürliche Herzlichkeit und Freude. So wurden alle Worte, die er an uns richtete, gerne von uns Schwestern aufgenommen und bedacht. Es waren für uns wichtige religiöse Lebensweisheiten. Während seiner langen Haftjahre haben wir mit den Angehörigen um sein Leben gebangt. Ab und zu kam dann eine kurze Nachricht, die uns Hoffnung gab. Nachdem er in Rom lebte, war es wieder möglich, mehr Kontakt aufzunehmen. Seine Besuche in unserem Mutterhaus als Bischof und zuletzt als Kardinal waren meist kurz, aber für uns tiefe Begegnungen, die über seinen Tod hinaus unvergessen bleiben. Aus Anlass seines Jahrgedächtnisses wollen wir im Gebet vereint, Gott um seinen Segen bitten für den Seligsprechungsprozess und dass Friede einkehre in Vietnam und der ganzen Welt.
