Comparatives and superlatives The comparative forms of adjectives and adverbs are used to indicate how similar or different two things are. Comparatives in German add –er to the adjective or adverb, both to one-syllable words and to words with more than one syllable. One-syllable adjectivves and adverbs add an Umlaut to the stem vowels a, o and u in the comparative forms. Superlatives single out one thing from all others (the best book, her oldest child, etc). To make the superlative in German, use the word am, then add an Umlaut to the vowels a, o, and u for one-syllable words and –sten to the adverb of predicate adjective. In the superlative –esten is added after one-syllable words ending in –t, -d, -s or –z.

7 COMPARATIVES When comparing two unequal things, you will use the comparative adjective + than in Englisch. AP S. 7 In German it is expressed by using the adjective + als old ⇒ older than alt ⇒ älter als When comparing two equal things, you will use the comparative as adjective as in Englisch. In German it is expressed by using the so adjective + wie (use basic form)
