26 LINUX MANAGEMENT HERAUSFORDERUNGEN
Deploy Automatisierung und Durchsetzung von Standards Umstellung der Anwender mit ihren Ressourcen Manage One-to-many management Support bei Konfiguration Zentralisierung des Support bei gleichzeitiger Beibehaltung des Service (-Levels) Maintain Remote-Management Update ohne Unterbrechung der Dienste Flexible Reaktion auf kurzfristige Anforderungen The open source community consists of literally hundreds of thousands of developers around the world Engineers and IT professionals who are experienced in creating stable, high-quality software Results in a highly dynamic environment Developers are continually evolving the Linux operating system and generating and evolving many new applications Also, application software vendors who previously sold their applications only into proprietary operating environments are now extending their applications to the Linux environment The two most popular Linux distributions—SUSE and Red Hat—provide dedicated updating services for free or as a paid service Websites such as rpmfind.net offer complete repositories of past and present software packages When new software source code is released for a particular application, these companies and organizations compile and package the software for distribution to their user community A challenge for administrators is how best to update the applications delivered with their distribution

27 ZENworks 7 LINUX MANAGEMENT
Whether laptops or desktops, workstations are the place where work gets done. From accounts payable to the executive office, the computer provides an interface for productivity. However, the very same workstations that enhance productivity are a major cost center as well. The Gartner Group reports that the cost of owning a traditional desktop PC averages $6845, and $10758 per laptop. Certainly, that cost is not simply hardware and software alone. Gartner also states that 75% of the business cost of owning PCs is typically labor. Novell ZENworks for Desktops reins those costs into a tightly controlled, yet extremely flexible system to radically reduce the cost of owning Windows workstations. Unlike any other desktop management tool, ZENworks for Desktops manages the workstations’ entire lifecycle, from the day the workstations first arrive to the time when they are too outclassed by newer machines and must finally be removed.
