Talking responding to prompts in a predictable manner controlled pair practice or role-play drill-type questioning ‘reading’ a presentation or saying it from memory, uninterrupted spontaneous remarks & requests to teacher moving pair practice on by adding extra language response to unpredictable questions. eg follow-up, request for clarification being questioned while giving a presentation Examples of ……...

4 Spontaneous remarks ……. Can we engineer them ….. ….and how can ICT have a role in this ? Include a diversion in a power point - perhaps in the style of a FL advert taken from the web, or make this more personal to the class, eg image of football pitch / goal and ask: Peter, c’est vrai que tu as marqué trois buts hier ? Have a webpage (music, sport, TV ?) or a music track saved and minimised and bring it up while doing another task Use a picture which will ‘arrest’ the learners and ask a sequence of questions which becomes more open and higher-order

7 Creating a need or wish to react … Qui est-ce ? C’est une femme très honnête ? Elle est stupide, n’est-ce pas ? Wer ist das ? Hat er ein Problem ? Was hat er (nicht) gemacht ?

8 Examples of staged talk prompts - basic level: Du bist Mia oder Daniel Mia geht sehr gern zur Schule. Ihre Lieblingsfächer sind Kunst und Mathe, und sie hat Fremdsprachen gern, aber sie findet Geschichte langweilig. Daniel findet die Schule ganz dumm ! Er hat Sport gern und auch Musik. Er hat Englisch gar nicht gern und hasst Chemie !

9 Examples of staged talk prompts - more advanced: Tu es Stephan ou Christiane Stephan aime l’energie nucléaire et il utilise beaucoup d’électricité. Il mange du fast-food et il déteste les grèves de transport. Christiane déteste l’énergie nucléaire et fait du recyclage. Son père conduit les trains. Elle aime manger des aliments organiques. Discutez….

10 Picture stimulus given - students create text, either purely spoken (recorded ?) or as a prompt on the screen - this can be clicked to move on as necessary, eg Zum Frühstück…. esse ich …... Toast mit Marmelade. Ich trinke gern …... Orangensaft. Cornflakes …. mag ich gar nicht.
