The IT Challenge • Backups taking 96 hours (yes, 4 days) • Centralize and Virtualize all storage into one location • Running out of space, power, and cooling capacity Before and After • Racks – estimated 700 racks at 8 sites, replace with 40 at 5 sites (8 per site on average) – this is ongoing • Power – 3103 * 700w (servers, storage, and screens) = p unit = $6640 per day = $2,423,600 a year, replace with 47kw * 5 = 235 KW 6.5 unit = $304 per day = $110,960 a year • Network ports ports per server = Replace with 168 per site = 840 Full ROI in 8 months Entire solution has two interfaces – one to VMware and one to NetApp storage – and the entire infrastructure can be remotely managed from anywhere. This has resulted in huge savings in travel and management costs for provisioning activities. Fully provision a new VM from anywhere in just 12 minutes. It used to take weeks. This means that BT can turn around new request for services within an hour, which has opened a whole new business offering for them.
