2 The Pattern All regular verbs follow the same conjugation pattern
To conjugate a regular verb, first chop off the ending of the infinitive. Example: spielen (chop, chop) ---- spiel You are left with the stem of the verb; now add endings ich spiele, du spielst, er/sie/es spielt, Sie spielen wir spielen, ihr spielt, sie spielen

3 The Pattern Endings of regular verbs are always the same
Let’s try that with “machen” Singular Plural -e -en -st -t -t -en And the polite form: -en ich mache du machst er/sie/es macht wir machen ihr macht sie machen Sie machen

4 Now we will conjugate “telefonieren”
ich telefoniere du telefonierst er/sie telefoniert wir telefonieren ihr telefoniert sie telefonieren Sie telefonieren

5 When the verb stem ends in –s, –ß or –z Examples: reisen, heißen
When the verb stem ends in –s , –ß or -z we have to watch out for the second person singular because the ending –st also contains an –s. In these cases we only add a –t in the second person singular! ich reise ich heiße du reist du heißt er/sie reist er/sie heißt wir reisen wir heißen ihr reist ihr heißt sie reisen sie heißen Sie reisen Sie heißen

6 When the verb stem ends in –t Example: kosten
When the verb stem ends in –t we have to watch out for the second and third person singular as well as the second person plural. For pronunciation reasons, we add an –e to these endings ich koste du kostest er/sie,es kostet wir kosten ihr kostet sie kosten Sie kosten
