Metadata Views The METS schema is a standard for encoding descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata regarding objects within a digital library, expressed using the XML schema language of the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard is maintained by the Library of Congress. Descriptive View Descriptive metadata describes the content of a publication, e.g. author, title, publisher, date, format. There are various standards for descriptive metadata, e.g. Dublin Core, ONIX for Books/Serials, MARC, and IEEE LOM. There is no one standard that is 'best' and the one chosen may depend on the context. For example, publishers may use ONIX for Books/Serials for e-commerce, librarians use MARC for cataloguing resources, the education community uses IEEE LOM for e-learning applications, DublinCore is a basic set for cross-domain information resource description, and DarwinCore is a DublinCore extension for biodiversity information. All pre-existing Metadata that comes into BHL-E will be converted into MARC – and is presented as MARCXML Additional BHL-E Fields have to be filled in during the BHL-E data submission process 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH September 18

Which metadata fields exceeding the MARC21 standard are necessary to provide our desired BHL-E portal search and presentation functionalities? Status The list of D2.1 Metadata fields was further mapped to the Library of Congress Metadata for Digital Content ( and to the Europeana ESE fields ( ) 28.
